Silent Disco - too weird for words?

Emily Eavis has organised headphones for all in the new Silent Disco - meaning that all can party unlimited by noise restrictions. Have you been to a silent disco before? Is it too weird for words?

never mind that. it's 1a.m. friday night and inbetween some great live music i have to suffer 2 muppets presenting bbc3.
it's no suprise i don't know who they are when one of them just tried to convince the nation that james dean bradfield of the manic street preachers is the bass player in the band.
and i don't even like the manics, but i do know that he isn't the bass player because the bass player isn't fat and chooses to wear womens clothes. i mean, everyone knows that.
that is, apart from your presenters.
whoever chose those two ignorants to present coverage of the worlds best live music festival needs a good kicking.

Wouldn't it be great if Fatboy Slim turned into Daves Mobile Disco? Imagine... "Hey, Hope you enjoyed that hip and happening tune. That was the Jackson Five with ABC. Now for a bit of Tavaris, and later, we'll be making some Eye to Eye contact with Edwin Starr". Now that would be entertaining!!!
Me, here.
The Silent Disco sounds like a great compromise!
If you had the choice between the headphones or no music then it's headphones all the way.
It's a shame the residents can't tollerate loud music for 2 nights a year, but hey.
Wish i was there!
James Bristol
I am curious is the music all the same through everyones headphones or is it various imaging one corner dancing to -
Abba, another Coldplay, another Chemical Brothers and in the middle they have a moshpit running listening to the System of Down Album...it's worth a photo opp if nothing else.
Jayson / Somerset
Yeh sounds great every1 has had the experience of sittin in a bus or train listenin to music n cant help bobbin up n down in tim wit the music
at least wit this you can look like a complete fool along wit hundreds of other ppl
sadie ashford
My friend went to a headphone party and reported that there was absolutely no atmosphere at all. None. Quiet is not the new loud.
A.Dehany, London UK
I'd just love to be there without the headphones and watch what people look and sound like without the music. I suspect they'd still be very loud.
Aejaz, Sheffield
I think it's a great idea, Imagine how silly you'll all look with big black headphones on!!!
Kelly Jones/ Newport
Amazin idea! I only wish I could be there, its maaaaad!
Baz s-o-t
Would be even better if they had a woofer going at subsonic so you still got the bass feeling without creating any noise.
Andrew
When I first heard about it I thought cool everybody dancing without any music more people should do this. Then I read it was with headphones, which is clever as you just have to take your headphones off and you can chat with someone without having to shout in their ear. I'm presuming that the headphones are wireless otherwise everyone will become tangled up and thats a different type of dance all together.
Joel, from Somerset but in NZ
does anyone know what signe language is for 'your fit'?
steve london
It would be a right laugh... bring it on!
Angela, Wembley
Silent Disco eh? I hear rings of the Lowlands Festival in Holland here!!!! It works well. Its not the taking part but the spectating and guessing what they are all dancing along to!!!
Alan, Bath
To Richie in Glasgow....no they are not showing the Lions first test match, I already asked and got a flat "no"!
Doug, Guildford
A lot of you guys have missed the point: its either silent disco or no disco because of the noise restrictions. If you dont like the idea then go and do something else, duh! Its a brilliant idea, and just for the BBC's information: it wasnt Emily who organised it, its a bunch of Germans who have already done it elsewhere, lets just hope the music isn't euro-trance, otherwise it would be a disaster!
Monty, The Summer of Love
wicked idea. Does make it all happen into the early hours, well done mr eavis now there shouldn't be any reason for compaints about noise pollution anymore
niels/rotterdam holland
I tell ya, I can't wait. i'll be ready with my camera to get that weirdness captured for posterity! ... and the BBC of course!
Emma, Southwark, London
This is gonna be madness, after a few mushrooms things are really gonna fly!!!
Silent Disco indeed...
The Krazy Cat, St.helens
Is the Lions test against New Zealand going to be shown on a big screen? PLLLLEASSSSSSSSSSSSE!
richie, glasgow
Wak: I could listen to my stereo on the tube anytime for chrissake. In a club or gig you need the music to surround you, listening to some tinny headphones at a rave sounds awful. Whats next, a 'virtual' party? Where da sub?
No easy way to get past noise restrictions. Just have check out the live bongos up at the stone circle at 5 in the morning...
Jamie MacLean in London town
All you will hear is the stomping and squelching of 6000 wellies all to the same beat. I'll be a spectacle to behold.
Anyone know where you will be able to get the headphones from?
Can you bring wireless headphone from home? as they only have 3000 of them a lot of people will miss out....
Matt / Brizzzoll
I love earphones discos (we used to have them here in Spain), and will be attending this event purely for the earphone disco.
Susanna Mawene, Seville
its going to be a bit haphazared what with all those wires- with people drinking and god know what else. Im surprised the council is allowing it.
Chris South London
I'm surprised nobody involved with flashmob (http://www.flashmob.co.uk) has organised a mobile clubbing event at Glasto! For those unfamiliar with this it's where a big group of people turn up somewhere at a pre determined time and do something strange.. usually dancing in silence to their own iPod/Walkman/MP3 player. I guess this wouldn't look out of place at Glasto though! Silent disco sounds like fun though.. just hope those headphones go loud.
Rich, Shipley
Its a novelty thing which is perfect for a trial run at Glastonbury, but I'd hate to see it replace good old fashioned speakers, that would just be plain wrong and against everything the festival stands for in general, surely.
Andy M/Leigh-on-Sea, Essex
i think it will be great. i can sing as loud as i want without offending anyone!!!
Sarah - London
No, its a joke. its another foot in the grave for festivals as we know them.
Peter, Glasgow
its just another one of those touches that make glastonbury what it is
ste / preston
what is the point of this absolute farce
tfghghfgh
Only at Glasto!
I Love it.
Alan. Worthing
Its a great idea. I'm really looking forward to poking my nose in and seeing hundreds of people dancing in silence, and maybe becoming one of them! See you there!!
Zoz, London
thank god that 2 many dj's aint playing there!!!
robby sint niklaas belgium
I definetley hope it works, but im well skeptical!
Josh, London
I can't wait to se it. hundreds of people stamping their feet and waving there arms in silence. it will be like break dancing in a library until that 1 person screams at the top of his voice " MATE THIS IS FANTASTIC!!" breaking the 3am silence because he's turned the volume up to the max on his headphones
simon, bristol
Still think this is an April Fools joke thats just gone on and on and...if it's really there it would be a shame to miss the worlds first silent dance party so i'll keep on the lookout.
Nick
its just going to be joke aggeeee boycot the headphones in the dance tent up on the dutch pot ight
alistair n louis nottingham
Although I'd prefer loud music hands down, silent disco is better than no music atall!!
James, Bath
Good idea, but noise restrictions are bad news for everyone, it's a festival for godsakes.
I expect too see crowd congestion around the dance tent, I'll give it a miss.
Jethro / Hull
as SA said, it should be loud enough so that the bass moves you. i always wear ear plugs because i want to save my hearing but i do enjoy 'feeling' the music through my whole body.
pharmacy Mudchester
How will the DJ's mix in silence? it all seems too good to be true, but I'll be along to check it out anyway for a laugh. I reckon there will still be some sound
Paul, London
the headsets will make great souvenirs....
g,leeds
Sounds cool, will be funny being drunk and walking into the tent with loads of peeps bopping!! good too video anyway! One for You been Framed me thinks?
abbie, eastbourne
sounds fun to watch em but i like to feel the baseline kicking in not sure but will give it a go! see u all there guys bopping to silence
amanda / cardiff
I hope there are enough headsets to go around otherwise it'll be like being on a train with everyone wearing a Walkman where you can't quite make out the song they're listening to!
Meurig /Pembroke
I am sure it bit a lot of fun but what sort of headphones can reproduce the feeling of bass sounds through your entire body?
gary/liverpool
ill be there shakin my thang
montyrat / runcorn
Looking forward to trying it out. And for those people worried about not enough headphones - chill out - its Glasto - just walk up to someone, tap them on the shoulder, give em a smile and i am sure they will let you have a go. Enjoy
Paul, Perth
I think it's a great idea and very funny to boot. At least you'll be able to take them off and talk to your mates without having to scream in their ears! There definitely won't be enough to meet the demand though. Ho-hum.
Mark in Brighton
i'm unsure about this, i think its a very good idea, but im also uncertain about the amount of headsets... surely they wont be able to give everone a set?
charlie - tonbridge
i think iot will work because it will be fun
cheryl beasley coventry
Great idea to get around noise restrictions, but agree with the expectation that there simply will not being enough to go round to meet the demand.
Neil, Manchester
go for it! I'll certainly be wandering along for viewing amusement!
Andy, Dorset
Top stuff for honest British music, we've all spent too long under a thick blanket of pop-stars. Top stuff to Glastonbury for helping to promote it this year.
Nick, London
I just think it'll be strange if you come accross the dance areas by accident & find thousands of people bobbing their heads in sync to the sound of silence. It's a good idea though for those who dislike sleep.
Chris, Darlington
i've never been to a silent disco .. but its hard to imagine .. there's nothing better than feel the basslines and kicks in your chest !
emilio from buenos aires
great fun!loud music but silent!
tony/devon
I like to feel the bass rattle my ribs :-) So i think i will give it a miss + there will be far to many people to please
SA ~ Newcastle - U - Tyne
it will be loud in ur ears tho wont it?
thnk its an ace idea
simon, granthan
sounds like great fun to do and watch!! cant wait to give it a go!
Toni, somerset
I think it'll be an amazing idea and will *kinda* work. I think all the people there will have an amazing time, it'll work, and be fun. However, when about 120,000 people all turn up at the dance stage at about 1am when the other main stages have finished to see the (well hyped up) silent disco there will be neither enough space, nor headphones to go around and will leave loads of people thinking it looked fun but they'll never be able to join in. Also, if you have to give back your headphones when you pee, I think you'll never get back in to see the rest of your mates til it's over! Lol.
PJ Dolphin, Southampton
no. terrible idea. music is supposed to be loud. especially late at night when its dance music! otherwise whats the point!!
looby london
No way would not work
Tcool
I think the silent disco will be fun and am definately for the idea. Even just watch im sure it will be pretty amusing.
Stuart
I went to a club in Amsterdam last year and part of the club was sectioned off and had a silent disco - when i first walked into the room i though i had entered some sort of mad house with people dancing around to no music, but after a short while i was handed some headphones and it was wicked. A but strange at first but i think its a great idea....and pretty fun to watch too. We spent most of the night with the headphones off trying to guess what people were dancing to.....ahh the things you do after a few drinks!
