No Glasto 2006! How will you cope?

So the farm needs a bit of a rest from all that noise and all those people. What are your alternative plans for 2006? Recomend your favourite festivals.

The BBC presentation matches the music well; its a cooler version of CBBC with Newsround style intermissions... Which is great if you're 14 and suffer from an attention deficit disorder. Ye Olde Glasto will be missed, as is John Peel. I for one will certainly not miss Glasto in 2006.
Nathan, Huddersfield
Im too old for Glasto (couldnt talk my son and his mates into it) interested in the coverage comments this year. This might not go down well but why havent Sky latched onto the demand -pay per view and all? with mega thousands wanting tickets?
Re the presenters - sorry but theyre rubbish. Where is the new John Peel.
Some great new music around but for the oldies like me New Order were an embarrassment .
GB Leeds
Did anyone hear Chris sing Kylie's 'Can't get you out of my head'? Cripes, I never rated his singing, but he absolutely murdered it - it was almost embarrasing!!!
Kev, Crawley
the land definately needs a rest from all the activity. it just amuses me what arciologists are going to find there in 1000 years, and what they'll make of it all. the bands are about as rock now as dry bread, if you want good bands you have to go see them either on tour or at one of the smaller festivals, glastonbury's got too big even when there is a good band you can't see them. it needs a break to recover and sort itself out.

Thank you for making me dizzy. Why the endless changing of stages on BBC 2 and BBC 3, interupting the reason we switch on - to see the bands live - with news breaks, endless prattle, and meaningless gossip? Maybe the lead singer of Kasabian's endless cursing was in response to the BBC coverage. Is it too much to ask that the BBC 3 coverage split screen stays with a stage each throughout the day/evening? Let the viewer decide, and live up to that "choice" we're supposed to have. Let BBC 2 serve the highlights for those without BBC 3. I tried in vain to chase coverage of New Order (one track in, and a news break, spare me!!!) across the evening. I'll not be making the same mistake on Sunday. Let me know when you stop trying to be MTV and re-discover what the BBC gets a licence fee for. Public service.
John Blackpool
I will be going to the Rhythms Of The World
festival in Hitchin. There will be 10 stages,200 bands and its free! Also, unlike Glastonbury there is no need to worry about the rain.
Rob,Stevenage
Any chance of hearing the Tori Amos set on the accoustic stage this Sunday, with all the channels that the BBC are covering, you'd think they could at least manage this n?
Michael, London

The band that covered Love Will Tear Us Apart were the band that wrote it, albeit with a different name - Joy Division then became New Order as you saw today (lousy set I thought and as for Keith Allen the less said the better).
Paddy, Bristol
I have loved the coverage of glasto 2005, i was sooooo anoyed i couldnt get tickets but the bbc have made me feel part of it! the new presenter has come in to his own, wouldnt keep the moustache tho. i loved hearing about the midnight carnival and the headliners of the world jazz stage. How can this not happen next year????
Dave, Croydon
BBC coverage was Shy with a capital Tight. 2 channels covering the same event yet neither have managed to show a single full set.
Roy Manchester
I think probably the main reason for no Glastonbury 2006 is the lack of bands capable of headlining. Me and a "young" friend of mine were discussing what bands were capable of this and came up with five:
Radiohead - who already did it in 2003, so it's a bit soon.
White Stripes - Erm....did it last night.
R.E.M.- Again did it in 2003.
Oasis - More's the pity
U2 - The only possibility of maybe doing it in 2006.
Interpol may be capable of headlining, but it's a little hard to judge a performance on the BBC's coverage of two and half songs.
Yeah, I'm having a go at you...
Darren Gore, Coppull, Lancashire
phew found it!!
Nouvelle Vague covered Love Will Tear Us Apart!!
Vini, Sheffield
Watching today about 4pm, and some group did a cover of New Order - Love Will Tear Us Apart, who was it?
Vini, Sheffield
What is te matter with Colin & Edith - they haven't mentioned ASH once and I'm now watching them on More Bands and they are easily the best band so far. New Order were bloated, unfit and out of breath. Kaiser Chiefs are a joke comedy band. Kasabian can't write songs. And thats all we hear about when the best band Ash get no mention because they don't have a new album out to be plugged!
Paul Robinson, Reading UK
The Glastonbury is so cool i hope it s going to be there next year again, i have been going for the third year now and is still cool, royksopp rocks!

Tuned in again. Another 5 minutes of self indulgent "music".
Bloated, and imploding.
Music is the ultimate democracy, and only a few bands will survive to create entertainment.

Come on bbc do something about the web cam, and listen to what people have to say it will ultimately benifit us all

This year Glasto lots of rain tents floating away. I bet if they did one next year 2006 the tents would be catching fire from extreem heat! Always the way. I love all the extensive coverage, but the presenters are aweful! Jo Whiley and Jon Peel truly rocked. Didn't chitter chatter too much or over-praise bands. The current two are really ass licking by the looks of it. But thanks for all the coverage anyway it's great maybe 2007 I'll get to actually go.
Baby B, Hertfordshire
I went to Glastonbury 2000 and too be honest it is nothing no more than people who never listen to rock let alone know who the bands are.And if rock is so popular how come the normal everyday music media full of Britanny Spears and Kylie Minogue type pop?
This is a hang on to the old 1960's and at worst the British trying hard but can't quite out do Woodstock of USA.
Hippy days are over so come on lets all get over it.
Peter B, Worcestershire
what?! no glastonbury next year? that is an outrage! what are we to do now xcept sit and watch boring rubbish on tv when we should be having the time of our lives and making good memories at the only festival worth going to. i just hope that by then people haven't forgotten the thrills and spills of the festivities that lie in the heart and soul of glastonbury.
christina, harrogate
I think they are mad not to have glaton 2006! How will we survive!!!!!aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Eleanor johnson/oxford
White Stripes were rubbish last night, I couldn't believe they were headlining when they were totally out-classed by the Doves earlier on. BBC coverage is annoying, too many people that know nothing about music talking absolute rubbish. Jo Whiley, I mean we know she's just trying to sound cool, but, were you listening to the same White Stripes set as me last night?! BBC, redeem yourself, show some coverage of the Rufus Wainright set, Nigel Kennedy, and pretend that Basement Jaxx aren't on. As for no Glasto 2006, I'm disappointed, I went last year and it was amazing, Maccers was great, and Muse rocked.
Ben in Lancs
Please please please can someone tell me the name of the band that covered Love will tear us apart on bbc2 this afternoon...Thank you
Peter - Swansea
I have to agree with all the comments about the poor BBC coverage. What's the point of pressing the red button if its all the same snippets on a loop. Maybe the Eavis' will take next year to think how they can bring the festival to an even wider audience - without us having to bail out our tents..
Simon, Oxford
The BBC coverage has been really disappointing - how many times do we have to see the Killers set? Repeated on BBCs 2 & 3 as well as BBCi last night. With the huge variety of bands on at the festival, can't the BBC show a little more variety? I was plesed to see a bit of the Secret Machines set - more of this please. Can we have some Morning Runner, Bright Eyes, The Earlies, Sons & Daughters & M83 please?
Rebecca, London
I think a lot of the criticism of Glastonbury, mainly by veterans from previous decades, is made by people who haven't been for years, and hence don't really know if its good or not. And those who have never been and say its too commercial or has changed have not idea what they are talking about. It has its flaws, but is still an amazing experience. Understand that you may stay at home and criticize, but if you go you WILL love it, regardless of your quarms. One of the main things is the ridiculous ticket prices and the unfair means of distributing them. A lot of the money goes to charity, but a lot does not.
Joe, London
No Glasto 2006? What will all the BBC staff do? It seems everyone and his/her dog gets to go if they work at the BBC. Annie Mac sums it up in her diary reference to the paying public as "the punters". It seems to show an attitude of Glastonbury snobbery. Pity the poor girl and her boss had to "trudge over muddy fields with all our bags for the weekend". Welcome to the real world of festivals. At least she managed to get a BBC dinner and fall asleep. Hurry up back to your hotel Annie, so you can ring your mates and tell them what a great time you're having. The BBC should have a rethink in 2006, downsize their presence for 2007 and concentrate on satisfying the people who can't get tickets with more on-TV performances rather than provide a corporate jolly for the Corporation's staff. I was first inspired to go by watching Jools Holland on TV, walking around the site late at night talking to people in the fields, where has all that gone? It's time to Get Back to Reality! If this isn't the way the BBC want it to be portrayed to "the punters" then do something about it.
Mick Shears, Broseley
I don't even bother trying to get tickets for Glastonbury: they're sold out before the ticket-lines even open. I can fully appreciate the legendary status of the festival but I agree that the media are destroying it. It's not the bloody olympics and the whole sense of community at ANY festival is diluted through the cameras: Radio 1 just pissing everyone off. It's not the name, it's not the bands and it doesn't always have to be Glastonbury, it's what you make of it as every music festival is. At that time, it's the best ever. Glasto is not the be all and end all.
Alex, Birmingham
BBC boasts about having the most extensive coverage of the festival ever - over 3 channels and interactive. So why are they just showing and repeating footage of the major bands? Why can't you get access to the John Peel stage (remember him BBC?) on interactive? Mark Radcliffe was going on about Manchester bands, so why haven't they shown the brilliant Nine Black Alps or Longcut?
Tony - Nottingham
The BBC needs to take a long hard look at its TV, radio, online and interactive coverage of the festival before it returns in 2007.
The BBC coverage spoils the atmosphere, doesnt let ppl see whats really going on, and is a waste of licence fee money.
Read some of the comments above, and you will see what i mean.
My suggestions:
1. get rid of the presenters, and all the chit chat in between.
2. focus on the music, all the music, not selected bits.
3. dont hop around so much, stick with one venue all night.
joe, worcester
BBC Glasto Webcam.... WHAT?? Show us some people, not the back end of a building site!! Find the person responsible for it and drag them upside down through the mud in just their knickers.. Couldn't get tickets, want to feel like I can 'look in' and 'be there' somehow!
Spid, Bristol
I have been most years since 1985 and teh festival has changed a lot in that time - not always for the worse I have to say - the year when the Happy Mondays played and the site was over run with thieves was probably the low point. To me it doesn't have the spirit of freedom it once had but then that might just be me getting old. I decided not to go this year but I will try to take in some of the other festivals which are on - I usually go to WOMAD which is always good if a tad middle class but it's great for kids and I once met Jimmy Page there and had a good natter.
Paley, Leeds
come on bbc3 how many times do i have to ask?dont have 60 secs,on during glasto coverage!yesterday they cut to 60 seconds, when doves were in the middle of a song! i am fed up with bbc not listenig to peoples complaints.whats the point of having complaints dept, when nothing is ever done?

The sick side of Glastonbury
At least two thirds of the world
Are living in conditions very close
To what the people of the Glastonbury festival
Are now living in.
It seems to me to be a sick old world
When we are so rich in the west
That we can pay to live like people in the third world,
The only difference being we can have Background music,
Remember this when you’re sleeping in your tent
When the festival is over you go back to your nice warm home
Two thirds of the world can’t do that
And they don’t even have the music.
Dennis T Baker /south wales UK
Play some music dont cut things out its so stupid. Stupid BBC just leave it live not you blabbering on.
Becca, Bath
Off to Reading. Have to say that The White Stripes came across as a bit rubbish and not that talented, hope the bbc presenters were being subtly ironing in their excessive praise.
Pete, Nottingham.
never mind that. it's 1a.m. friday night and inbetween some great live music i have to suffer 2 muppets presenting bbc3.
it's no suprise i don't know who they are when one of them just tried to convince the nation that james dean bradfield of the manic street preachers is the bass player in the band.
and i don't even like the manics, but i do know that he isn't the bass player because the bass player isn't fat and chooses to wear womens clothes. i mean, everyone knows that.
that is, apart from your presenters.
whoever chose those two ignorants to present coverage of the worlds best live music festival needs a good kicking.
stevie p / the north
Just watched Fatboy Slims set online, well good, nice light show too.

It's a pity, but what Glastonbury used to stand for has now long gone, probably never to return. It's in the hands of the corporations and marketing men to do with as they please, and to make as much money as possible. It's a shame - I'll never go again.
Jim, Henfield
As an armchair viewer of Glastonbury this year may I say how relieved i am that there wont be a festival next year.Having seen the BBC set for post-performance interviews/links my retinas will need at least a year and a bit to recover.Come on BBC, who on earth do you employ to give advice on these matters - robots? Sort it out! Surprised from N4 ,London
Shocked John Finsbury park London
I think that a year off is good. I've been in 97', 99', 00', 02' and 04'. Last year i braved it and took my 5 year old daughter (hence no 98'). She loved it and cried when i told her we couldn't get tickets. I say HAVE TWO FESTIVALS!!! Glastonbury is SO popular, you could make so much more if you had two, one after the other. Hard work, but think of all the happy people that CAN go,and more money for charities that need it.
Shelly from Exeter, Devon
ITS NOT ON NOT HAVING A GLASTO IN 2006, ALTHOUGH IT HAS BECOME WAY TOO COMMERCIAL AND THIS DOES NEED TO BE SORTED OUT, IT AS IF EAVIS HAS SOLD OUT, GO TO DOWNLOAD INSTEAD.
JON SOUTHAMPTON
The BBC coverage is rubbish as usual! Why on earth dont they just show the sets that actually happen there instead of boring and irrelevant performances in a tent....that isnt glastonbury you idiots. stop hogging the airtime you sad lot. let us see what ppl at glastonbury see
john, leeds
So Michael Nevis says that everyone needs cheering up - well what the heck has he done getting Coldplay to play there?! I'm not a Coldplay fan at all and it will probably be even more miserable than the weather. Glad to have missed this one, the line up stinks.
Sam, Brighton
Went to Glasto years ago and I have to say that it's gone down the pan now. It's now a corporate event with sponsorship and business wrangling for a slice of publicity off the back of it. And what's all this nonsense around 'disco tents'? We had one stage and one band at a time and there was around 30k people there to enjoy it. It's now too big and has become a shadow of the spirit it was supposed to be. Oh, and Basement Jaxx headlining it.....that just about sums it up!!!
Dave, Horsham
Silver lining... BBC tents washed out BBCTV 3 guy says "can't do what we planned, so we'll have to take you back to the music" Thank god for that. You're either there or not... if not, the ambience can't be created by these annoying TV "personalities" but it's good to hear the music if you couldn't get a ticket. Let's hope the jocks take a very low profile in their bit of mud and they take a long time cleaning up their tent.
Michael, Dorset
hey there is loads more great music festivals aroound the world, spain has one of the best festival you could every go too, and there a new festival in kidare in Eire, which getting bigger and bigger. However i think Glasto is one of the best things that has every happend to the music world.
God Bless John Peel
barry f manchester
Used to go a lot in the 90s - only been once since the big fence went up (my brother was playing so blagged it) - I know its not the same blah blah - but still an amazing festival - BUT the BBC & rest of media coverage bears no resemblance to the actual festival - from watching the smug coverage you'd think it was just a big Indie/Radio 1 festival with some bands playing at the end of a big field - instead of the most varied festival on earth - SORT IT OUT!!
John Sheffield
Hey i think that having no glastonbury next year is wrong as it has been around for ages and apparantly it's only the new people that have arrived in the area that have complianed so i think it is wrong! theu knew where they were movin so why complain.
debra, bristol
I stopped going after 1996 when half the crowd were either fence jumpers or pikeys out to steal your tent and then sell it back to you the next day. I was persuaded to go back in 2003 and 2004, and yes, the festival is more sanitized and a media frenzy now, but the music and variety was just as great as ever. The whole festival has improved since then – don’t knock it. I’ll be back in 2007.
J, Brighton
used to go to stonehenge years ago when the summer festival was free it was super
what is glastonbury?
kids that think todays music drugs and beer are the best thing on the planet (grow up)
eddie worcestershire
I really hope Steve from Bristol was being sarcastic. Glastonbury has been ruined by Radio 1 and all the hype. The 'tree huggers' were part of made the festival so special, and it is these people who are being pushed out. A year off is def needed, hopefully Radio 1 will have found something else more exciting to talk about (constantly for weeks until you are sick of hearing about it)
Sam, Hull
Glastonbury Festival is the best, but now its become so popular, the locals are not being able to get tickets. I think next year if they decide to cancel they should hold it just for the locals! Down size a bit, but still have the music etc. Please dont cancell pilton its the best!
Katie, Somerset
well no glastonbury this year for me
and then none next year obviously

No Festival ....Relieve for locals in Street , Glastonbury .
Martin, Street
Glasto will be sadly missed next year and i'll probably go abroad maybe to Benicassim in Spain. Glasto has, and will always be the mother of all festivals. This is my tenth year at the festival and all the people who say it's not as good as it used to be and it's for middle class people these days are talking out of their @rse. Bring it on : )
Dink, Haydock
I haven't been to Glasto since '92, and I went just about every year thru the late 70's & 80's until then. I don't ever think I will go again, its got too big, would love to see Costello and New Order again on the same weekend, but Coldplay? Give me a break am I the only person on the planet who does not like Coldplay?
Robert, Hounslow
Glastonbury is nothing like it was. It's a shame that the current glastonbury festival is now the best Britain has to offer. Says alot about the way the youth of this country has changed... They've lost their fighting spirit since the Criminal justice act killed it.
Todays festival is soooooo middle class.... what happened to all the weirdos that used to make Glastonbury so good.
There are loads of alternative festivals around that still have a little of the old glastonbury spirit and are affordable to more people. Shambala is one such festival.
Hopefully I'll be going to Deeply vale in the northwest in 2006, check out www.deeplyvale.com for more info.
Rich, Liverpool
Not sure whether I will be watching Glasto on TV this year (feelin too miserable). Also haven't been able to get tickets since 2003. I would be interested to know whether the festival still has the same cross-section of people that made it an amazing experience, now that it has become nearly impossible to purchase tickets unless you have a superfast internet connection.
Julie Sheffield
I have never been to Glasto and I agree with Mat. from London that it has turned into being too corporate. All the radio stations have been giving away tickets for months. It would be really good to see 'celebs' having to get up and 5.30am in the morning to get in the phone queue just like the rest of us........and to exepience that feeling of utter disappointment to finally get throigh and be told that they have sold out (not that I am bitter or anything !) Please reconsider next year Mr Eavis and give some people a chance who have not been before, not just those who can get thier tickets through some other means.
Alice, London
I'm off for the first time this weekend. I'm a bit nervous about meeting the great unwashed but i'm assured that since it has become gentrified, the tree huggers have been priced out.
Next year I'll be going to the Burning Man festival in Nevada. The best weeks fun on the planet.
John, Wargrave
I am glad there is no festival next year because I can never afford to go and all my mates go with out me. May be if I save £10 a month from now until the next one I'd have enough for my ticket and spending money - cash back!!
Steve, Bristol
I haven't been able to get tickets for Glasto since 2003 so I'll just have to cope with Download and Reading again next year! :)
Helen, Portsmouth
I can't really get away from the feeling of rushing when it comes to Glasto what with all the preparation for tickets, ID cards etc. Seemed like yesterday when you could get a ticket in May!!!...but I will certainly have an amazing time!
Jas. Brighton
Glasto 2006 would have been cool, but it's all far too marketed and commercial these days. What was once a down to earth festival that attracted the more diverse elements of the music-loving populous has now become a haven for pretentious, middle-class radio 1 listeners who think Coldplay and Keane are great.
The moment it gets back to it's folksy, blues roots and away from the huge rock and indie juggernaught it has become, the better.
Personally, I'll be at Beautiful Days next year. The line up might not be as stellar as Glasto, but the general atmosphere and vibe looks to be far better.
Adrian. Edinburgh
Yep, sad to miss next year, but there's always a rest year from time to time.
I agree that Glastonbury has become a victim of its own success. Lets get rid of the TV & radio coverage, get rid of the really big crowd drawing acts. Maybe then it might be possible for ordinary people to get a ticket.
Alas, maybe the amazing Glastonbury magic of old is long gone now, but you can still find some of it tucked away in a little tent somewhere at 3am....
Simon, London
how will i get through 2006 without glasto? the same way i do when it isnt on EVERY 5 years. Is it just because its become 'trndy' since the last fallow year that all of a sudden people are shocked at a no show? it happens ever 5 years - get over it. in 2 years time, perhaps glasto wont be flavour of the month by then and all the new middle class invaders will have forgotten it, and perhaps we can have our festival back! ta
Terry - Bath
due to the diaster in the ticketing ...having been to the last 10, putting up with freeloaders jumping over the fence onto my tent and nicking all my food and beer. I've plumped for a trip to bencassim in spain and so if this is as good ad predicted Eavis can forget about my and my friends and families money from now on.
scott coventry
Obviously "voddies, Bristol" has never been to Glastonbury otherwise he would realise that Glasto is more than just the music. It offers so much more than the standard music festival and is excellent value for money. Also there is a wealth of New music/bands to see and experience. Just try the new John Peel tent. Long may it continue.
Bas, Cornwall
i cannot wait for this years glastonbury, only 2 more days-but that also means 2 more days of school for me!!!Instead of glastonbury next year me and my family might be hiring a barge for a week and going down the canals...but it wont even be half as fun as glastonbury is !
Beth , Halifax , West Yorkshire
Used to live in Glastonbury when the festival was called The Pilton Pop Festival. Now it's like holding a Bristol Festival in Bath city just because it sounds better.
Mark. Redruth
As a non-digital (freeview? I don't think so..) viewer, as far as I can see there won't be much glastonbury for me in 2005, never mind 2006, and I live in Glastonbury!
ann mcivor GLASTONBURY
The best weekend of the year, I guess I'll console myself with the world cup next year, certainly be a very empty feeling without it though.
Dee in shepton Mallet
2005 will only be my second Glastonbury, but I do feel like a child of Worthy Farm. There's a little bit of you left there when you leave, and so you have to keep going back. I think the only way to pay true homage to Glastonbury is to stay at home at the end of june 06 and rest ourselves, there are no other festivals for me...
Alexandra, London
yeahhhh, glasto is over-rated over-charged and certainly not worth the money and hassle to see old geriatrics performing on the main stage (rod stewart, paul mccartney and the likes) Glasto is out of date.
voddies, Bristol
I look forward to it every year for past 21 years like a big kid waiting for christmas. Summer yule tide with family, friends and fun times in the sun - hopefully. The farm and festival need a break every so often but it will be sadly missed
Mary, Devon
They've obviously put it on hold to allow us to travel to Germany for the World Cup. They're just too damn considerate for their own good...
Ringo, Bournemouth
I've had 2 amazing Glasto outings...missing this year as i'm in New Zealand. Sorry to hear no madness next year! How will i survive???? Nothing even gets close to it...
Luke, Dunedin, New Zealand
Sorry - I do not think that anybody outside of the UK has ever heard of your festival.
gcrussell, Vancouver Island, Canada.
ive just booked a round-the-world ticket for 2006! its the only way i could get through the year without glasto! Anyone who's ever been will understand! anyone who hasnt won't! I think having a year off is a good thing though! let the hype go down a bit, and hopefully time to let radio 1 lose a few more listeners so they dont keep jibbling on about it so much!
mark, harlow
Benicassim Festival in spain. Thats going to be the next best thing to replace glastonbury next year. I think there will be a lot less chance of mud / rain / hail and much more chance of seeing bikini clad girls. Its all good.
Midge, Rhondda
It will be greatly missed by thousands of people. For me it is the highlight of the year, every festival a truly unforgetable experiance. This year will be my 23rd festival! and long may it continue !!
Ben in Pilton
I will probably go to the Reading Festival instead. Not the same but ah well!
Berkshire
It's all just a big hoax- it's gotta be! I bet michael & emily are hatching a cunning plan to have the smallest (and best) festival ever. I'm going to go to worthy farm at the end of june next year, knock on their front door & be greeted by the best bands the world has ever seen! Then we're gonna rock for 5 days solid, until the cows come home!
Max Barrett, Phuket, Thailand
Augustibuller in Sweden! But I will check out Priscillas this year in Glasto!
Tobba, Orebro, sweden.
Nothing even comes close to Glastonbury. All the other UK festivals may be good in their own way, but Glasto has a magical feel about it.
Chris, Darlington
Note to directors. Please can the coverage of the live acts not be treated like pop videos with fast cutting between cameras. Lets have a coverage that captures the performances as if we were there. i couldn't watch more than a couple of songs by each act last year.
huw. cardiff
Hopefully Michael Eavis will have a serious rethink & totally ban the BBC, or at least Radio1! Then it just might have a chance of getting back to the genuine free spirit that it once had. It would be so good to know that Jo Whiley has to struggle for a ticket like us "normal" people have to!
Otherwise it's RIP Glastonbury - over hyped then killed off by Radio1 !
Nick / Bournemouth
I'm going to go Interailing around europe and finish of at Benicassim Festival
Mat. London
I think a will try and do all the other festivals but glasto will be sadly missed in 2006.Bring on 2007.
