Glastonbury 1997

The Year Of The Mud

Torrential rain just before the weekend made 1997 'The Year of the Mud'. A daily newspaper was published by Select and BBC2 broadcast from a newly extended site which saw performances from the likes of Sting, The Prodigy, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and Supergrass. Glastonbury highlights included 'Dubhenge' made from upended VW Beetles and camper vans and the first ever Greenpeace field with solar heated showers.

After a lay year and suddenly we're back to 1916: trench warfare. My trousers stood up on their own for days after I got back. Scenes straight out of David Lean's Oliver Twist. I kinda liked it!

Actually 1998 was the year the raw sewage was pumped out. I was at 1997 and 1998. That was even worse conditions than 97. But 2007 was worse still. Ben to every one since 97

The mud WAS unbelievable; it was just so tiring. However the main thing I remember was the spiritual event that was…Radiohead's first full OK Computer gig in the UK. It was totally transcendental. Afterwards everybody was talking about how strangely unique this experience was. My top Glasto experience and best gig of all time!

Was my first ever festival, despite the awful mud it was great. Two memories I have are Prodigy being introduced on to the stage by the awesome Dennis Pennis; only to blow the sound system blow up. We had to wait for ages for it to be fixed.

Second memory is getting home and watching a copy of the highlights show. In the opening titles of every show there was a shot of my two mates with their tongues down each others throats....their respective partners were not happy having to watch that on TV!! LOL! Great memories!

Hi, can someone please tell me the name of the song that's playing on the opening credits of these highlights? cheers

The Prodigy were a big highlight for me... especially the tension that built up whilst Dennis Pennis vainly tried to improvise following the sound system failing... so much tension built up, which could only ever really be released by the opening bars of Firestarter. An unforgetable experience.

I still can't believe I chose to go and watch Kula Shaker play the Other Stage, whilst Radiohead performed arguably one of the best gigs ever over on the main stage... FAIL!
