Glastonbury 1992

Sacred Spaces and Rainbow Warriors

Following the end of the Cold War, Michael Eavis made the decision to donate the £250,000 raised funds to Greenpeace and Oxfam instead of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Designer Ivan McBeth created Sacred Space in King's Meadow by burying crystals and Shakespeare's Sister drew a crowd of young people who had been otherwise uninterested in the Festival before. Primal Scream, PJ Harvey and The Levellers also played to Festival-goers for the ticket price of £49.

Perhaps(!) my first. If the the 60's were 90's then i'm the washout. The start of a run of hot Glastonburies, with Flowered Up's weekender, sitting down for James, PJ Harvey showing her boots and everyone Higher than the Sun

I have very fond memories of this one, I could watch the pyramid stage from my tent, I'm sure you can't do that now. Blur before they were good, James sit-down, the sun shining, unofficial rave tents, hair braids and my Carter USM sponge ball that they threw out to the audience (I still have it).

This was a fantastic festival, great atmosphere, great music and great weather. The levellers was one of my highlights, worth the gastro-enteritis that hit me a few days later!

my only Glasto experience - I can never go back as it will never be as good as '92. Hot sunshine the whole w/end, walking for what felt like miles carrying a HUGE and very heavy tent to find the best spot to pitch in the same field as the pyramid stage, my friend and I being the only blond curly haired girls down the front of the Levellers...drinking too much cider and running from my tent to the stage when Tom Jones came on and we realised he was actually pretty good.... up until then we had been too cool to admit it! Such fantastic memories.

Ah, 1992, My first Glastonbury. It was a total blur of course and the sun shone all weekend. As far as I recall, the big highlights for me were Carter USM (unlike Jo I quickly lost my sponge ball), Blur and The Orb but the best set of the festival has to belong to Fishbone, we weren't expecting much but what an incredible set that was! I will never forget the epic crowd surfing "Could you kind people please return our singer to the stage" - Brilliant!

The first for me - The Orb and Primal Scream during an endless sunset - giant bubbles floating over the crowd - like finding a brave new world where bikers, rastas, ravers and hippies could coexist for one magick moment - culminating with Galliano on some distant stage - carried home sunburnt on the vibes - the "real" world would never be the same again!

And we could not burn the wicker man on the night and there was nearly a riot , it was burnt the night after and i still have my wicker man protection badge made by one of the officals.

For a minute or two I thought I'd found a unique grassy knoll from which to watch James. When it began to move I realised I was stood on someone who must have fallen asleeo in the midst of the melee.

      happy days.

This was my first, what we then called 'Glasters'. I am going back this year for the first time since, so hope that the atmosphere is just as positive.

Memories for me included it being so hot I had to ditch my jeans and buy a sarong which I wore for the whole weekend, meeting David Icke in the Green Field, and arguing with my then boyfriend over whether to watch John Hegley or The Levellers.

Looking forward to happy days at 'Glasto' 2010.

Definitely one of the best Glastos - Primal Scream played one of the best sets Worthy Farm has ever seen. I remember coming across an amazing unofficial rave in the woods - a central audio/visual tower at the centre point of a huge semi-circle of screens. It was just so exciting to be there and to take it all in. The eventual burning of a huge wicker man with accompanying pagan psycho/sexual characters took everyone to a new and slightly disturbing place.

My first and only Glastonbury but the The Levellers, Kitchens of Distinction and the Ukrainians were great and I remember Joolz doing poetry with Slade the Leveller (NMA) in one of the big tents.

1992 was my first Glastonbury. The highlight was definitely The Orb and Primal Scream with the sun setting behind them. I came back a changed person. Went again the next year but it didnt compare with 1992. Im going to go back with the wife and kids one year soon.
