The Eraser tool is used to delete elements. Just click on the eraser tab in the main toolbar then click on any grid square to delete its contents.
 Modify
If you want to change something about an element rather then delete it entirely, you can do this as follows. Imagine you make a step, but then decide later that you want to put a cymbal or some other triggered sound on it.
Right-click the step.
Right-click on the step (Mac users do ctrl-click instead). You will see the 'Modify' menu appear next to the step.
If you click on a grid square with more than one thing on it - a step and a ball for example - the red square will offer you a choice, like this:
Select step.
Click on the word 'step' and you will see the step highlighted by a red square. At this point the toolbar will change to give you all the step options.
Adjust the settings.
Check the trigger box and choose the trigger you want from the dropdown menu as before - say a vibraslap.
You will see that the step will automatically change so that it now has a vibraslap.
The same method can be used to change any other element, say to swap one ladder for another, to add walls to steps or to change the number of counts in a wormhole.
