Food

Northern anarchist Alex Riley goes in search of the most disgusting thing he's ever eaten - and finds it's not as straightforward as it seems. He discovers manufacturers with ingenious ways of transforming poor ingredients into something that looks and tastes like good food.

He unearths hidden horrors, from substitute cheese to beef connective tissue, and even creates and markets his own crap food.

A Microwavable twin pack doner kebab from a supermarket. Available at Tesco's. The bread was processed, the meat total S**t.

Whatever they put into '100%' minted lamb burgers. Surely pure minced lamb has no hard or gristly bits, right?

Worst top 3:
1. Vegemite (in Australia), tasted like rotten meat
2. Abalone, tasted like salt, texture of snot
3. 3am curries, just add to the hangovers

How dare these companies, with all their profits, make and sell this rubbish 'food' to us! They only make changes after major negative publicity. I literally shed tears when I saw what goes on.

Maart, Harlech 2008-08-15

Jellied Eels in Aspic in London, Vitello Tonnato (Veal in a Tuna Sauce) in Northern Italy, and Lutfisk in Norway.

Pies by the look of the crap that's allowed to go in them!

Richard Wilson, West Midlands 2008-08-15

A chicken kebab from Ibiza - I thought they must have left the bones in when I found something hard in it. It was not a bone!
