BBC Worldwide is set to partner French independent production company NEWEN to develop an adaptation of award-winning British drama Last Tango In Halifax for the French market.

The original series, written and created by Sally Wainwright and produced by RED Production Company, sees would-be childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia reunited after 60 years. As their lives collide for a second time, Alan and Celia lament over what might have been as they embark on a life-affirming journey of what can still happen. However, the path of true love is anything but smooth and the pair are surprised to find it’s their own families who create some rather bumpy obstacles.

The inaugural co-production between BBC Worldwide and NEWEN will create a new six part version (6x60’) of the romantic comedy drama.

Jean-Louis Blot, Director BBC Worldwide France, said: “We are excited to work with Newen teams to develop and co-produce Last Tango In Halifax. This is the beginning of a collaboration we hope long and successful.”

Tanguy de Franclieu, Managing Director in charge of the International Sector for Newen: “This new international agreement, with a broadcaster and a distributor so prestigious as the BBC, is part of the strategy already committed by the Newen group to go into partnership with major European groups to create, adapt and produce quality programs answering the expectations of broadcasters. Caroline Lassa, producer of great talent within our subsidiary, Telfrance group, who is at the origin of the successful series Candice Renoir, will be responsible for the development of the French adaptation of Last Tango In Halifax. Through this collaboration, which calls for other projects in the fiction with the BBC, it is also the talent and the expertise of all the producers of fiction into the Newen group which is recognized in France and on the international stage.”

Fabrice Larue, President of Newen says: “This agreement confirms our ambition to develop the best partnerships with major international actors and our strategy of international expansion.”
