BBC World News and BBC.com have commissioned Twofour to produce a new series of the popular programme Horizons that will premiere in Spring 2012.
Horizons is a 30-minute weekly programme, sponsored by DuPont, which explores the ways in which we will live and work in the next decade.
The second series of Horizons will continue the journey across the globe in search of the ideas and businesses that may succeed over the next decade in tackling the planet’s biggest challenges.
Adam Shaw will again serve as the lead presenter of the programme, with Saima Mohsin joining this season as co-presenter. Shaw is well-known to Horizons’ viewers and has worked on acclaimed BBC series including Panorama and the Today programme. Saima Mohsin has worked extensively as a reporter on various networks and current affairs programmes across the globe and is Special Correspondent for PBS Newshour in the USA. She previously fronted Dawn News, Pakistan’s first English speaking news channel, and in 2011 was presenting Channel 4 News in London.
Adam Shaw and Saima Mohsin will report from a wide range of countries, including India, Brazil, the US and China, on ground-breaking research and technologies that could determine our future. As the global population is expected to rise to 9 billion we need to ask ourselves how we will provide enough food, energy and clean water in the future? What will be the biggest advances in health and medicine and the best prospects for protecting the environment?
Twofour has been commissioned to produce the series and recently has produced ‘Harry’s Arctic Heroes’ for BBC One and ‘The TA and the Taliban’ for Watch. Rachel Innes-Lumsden, Executive Producer at Twofour, says “Twofour is thrilled to be producing the next series of Horizons. Building on series one, we will offer viewers a comprehensive look at the problems facing global communities and the solutions we need for the future”.
Mary Wilkinson, Commissioning Editor at BBC Global News, says “We are confident that the next series of Horizons will give audiences an even deeper insight into business, scientific and technological innovation around the world. The challenges are great but the pace of research is exciting and the pairing of Adam Shaw and Saima Mohsin will allow the series to travel to more locations and feature an even wider range of projects and companies."
DuPont Executive Vice President Mark Vergnano adds: “DuPont is proud to sponsor a second series of Horizons, and we’re thrilled the BBC is highlighting the tough issues facing our planet and the new scientific and technological innovations being developed to address them.”
