BBC Radio 1's Stories: Fan Armies

Monday 17 February

Nick Grimshaw explores the world of online fan armies with the help of One Direction, 30 Seconds To Mars, You Me At Six, Little Mix, Gabrielle Aplin and lots and lots of fans.

Joining a fan club used to be as simple as sending off a blank postcard from the inside of a bought CD. Now, thanks to smartphones and social media, fans can connect to millions of other fans the world over; they can instantly react to any news on their favourite act and can even contact artists directly.

Lady Gaga has her 'Little Monsters', 30 Seconds To Mars 'The Echelon', Miley Cyrus her 'Smilers', Justin Bieber the 'Beliebers' and the list goes on and on. Grimmy looks at how artists have been able to develop vast online followings that are active every minute of the day on sites like YouTube, Tumblr and Twitter.
