Desert Island Discs Revisited – The Good Life: Paul Eddington

Ep 1/1

Sunday 8 December

To kick off Radio 4 Extra’s celebration of The Good Life on Desert Island Discs, there’s a chance to hear Paul Eddington’s musical selection from 1981.

The actor’s choices included Bach, Britten, Vivaldi and Chopin. He revealed to Roy Plomley that the worst thing about being on the island would be “the knowledge that I couldn’t go and have a nice curry when I wanted one.”

Eddington played Jerry Leadbetter in the much-loved Esmonde and Larbey sitcom, married to Penelope Keith’s Margot. He was made CBE in 1987. Just before his death from skin cancer in 1995 at the age of 68, he told Jeremy Isaacs on Face To Face how he had once said to a journalist that he would like his epitaph to be, “He did very little harm”.

Paul Eddington’s Desert Island Discs is followed by Penelope Keith (15 December), Richard Briers (22 December) and Felicity Kendal (29 December). Radio 4 Extra will also be remembering Richard Briers (who died in February of this year) in a special series of programmes on Christmas Day.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 1981.
