Billy Budd From Glyndebourne

Confirmed for BBC Four on 17 November at 7.00pm to 9.45pm

Sunday 17 November

Glyndebourne has a proud association with the operas of Benjamin Britten, however until 2010 it had never staged Billy Budd.

The all-male opera with a libretto co-written by EM Forster is based on the battle between pure good and blind evil, set on a British man-o-war ship. Michael Grandage, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, chose this work to make his long-awaited operatic debut, while Sir Mark Elder conducts, marking the 100th opera production of his illustrious career. Broadcast to mark the centenary anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s birth.

In further Benjamin Britten programming BBC Radio 3 is to broadcast live from Suffolk, the county of Britten’s birth, during the composer’s centenary weekend. The station will be resident at Aldeburgh Music, broadcasting a unique programme of live music and discussion based on the theme of Britten and community from 22-24 November 2013.
