Listen To Your Parents

Ep 1/1

Tuesday 11 June

The poet, musician, novelist and playwright Benjamin Zephaniah has written several plays for Radio. First broadcast in 2000, this is a personal and moving drama told from the perspective of a young boy from Birmingham.

Living with a violent father, Mark tries to recapture many of his thoughts in small, simple poems. He's a talented footballer and poet, and his skill for shaping and rhyming words, for collecting thoughts in patterns, is his coping strategy.

Although not strictly autobiographical, Zephaniah did draw on experiences from his own childhood. Burt Caesar stars as the Father, with James Smith as Mark and Flo Wilson as his mother. The music was written Tayo Akimbode, who most recently wrote the music for The Listening Project.
