Make Me A Muslim

Confirmed for BBC Three on 30 January at 9.00pm to 10.00pm

Wednesday 30 January

Growing numbers of young British women are converting to Islam. Shanna Bukhari, a 26-year-old self-proclaimed 'Modern British Muslim' who once entered the Miss Universe pageant, sets out to discover why women are choosing this path.

She wants to understand why they are forgoing their freedom to party, drink and dress as they please to convert to a religion some people associate with the oppression of women. Shanna follows the highs and lows of five women as they embrace their new faith.

Among the women Shanna meets is Alana, a media student from Glasgow who became a devout Muslim after she met her fiancé Abdul whilst on a trip to Lanzarote to work as a Club Rep. She also meets Lisa from Reading, a tattooed self-confessed former wild child, now happily settled as a second wife and mother of three but who does not meet the approval of her in-laws.

Inaya from Lancashire has a totally different challenge to face – as a devout Muslim living in a remote Northern town, she says she is looking to find a husband but her chances of meeting someone are slim. Ayesha from Edinburgh is the convert Shanna feels she can identify most with, having managed to reconcile her faith with a career as a top model.

Unlike the converts, Shanna is not strict in the practice of her faith, and she loves all the freedoms her Western life allows. She discovers what has drawn these women to Islam and what sacrifices they’ve had to make. Through learning what it means to them, she’ll have to face what her faith really means to her.
