Superstars 2012

Sixteen of Britain's London 2012 Olympic heroes compete to be crowned the two best all-round Superstars

What appealed to you about taking part in Superstars?

It’s something different!  As a rower we are locked into a very specific training programme, so it could be a bit of a disaster (as my body is only good at one thing).  But it’s nice to see what else is out there and have a bit of fun doing it.

Were you already familiar with the show from previous series?

I’ve seen some of the past series, with Steve Williams and Sir Steve Redgrave in the running, so I have some big shoes to fill.  I’m just sorry we’re not going to somewhere sunny this time!  But I’ve heard Bath is nice in November.

Which event are you most looking forward to?

I’m really looking forward to the rowing event, but unfortunately the organisers forgot to put it in, so I guess it’ll have to be the archery.  I really feel this is an event I can really give my all to, push the limits and see what happens.

Are there any of the events that you are apprehensive about taking part in?

I’m a bit nervous about the running, as we spend all of our athletic careers on our arses, so this is going to be a bit of a shock.  However as rowers I feel we’ve taken the next evolutionary step in the human race, and gotten off our feet, so hopefully this will help… somehow.

What training have you undertaken to prepare for it?

I thought the best form of preparation would be to go on honeymoon for two and a half weeks, somewhere nice and warm, and eat and drink what I liked.  However upon starting training again I’ve realised that this concept has a fatal floor.  I’ve readjusted my focus now, and I think I’m going to be training as much as I can from now on.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you’ll want to do before each of the events?

I’m not a religious man, but I think I’ll be praying before each event.

Superstars will be shown over Christmas.  What are your own Christmas TV favourites? And what are your plans for this Christmas?

My plans for Christmas and New Year are simply to catch up with my family and friends.  I’ll keep the training going, but my main focus will be on refuelling with Norwegian (my mother’s nationality) Christmas dinner of belly pork on Christmas Eve, the traditional Turkey on Christmas Day, and as much marzipan the Dutch (my wife’s home) can throw at me over New Year.
