The world’s leading conductors guiding us through this year’s Proms include Daniel Barenboim, who conducts Wagner’s Ring cycle with the Staatskapelle Berlin (22, 23, 26, 28 July); Mariss Jansons, whose 70th birthday is marked with two performances with his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (8 & 9 August); Sir Antonio Pappano, who gives two Proms leading the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome (19 & 20 July); Lorin Maazel, who brings the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 (6 September) and Marin Alsop, who conducts the Orchestra and Choir of the Age of Enlightenment (17 August) and makes Proms history by becoming the fi rst female conductor to lead the Last Night of the Proms festivities (7 September).
Marking the start of his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo conducts the First Night of the Proms (12 July) and returns for a second performance with the orchestra (21 August). Thomas Søndergård makes his fi rst Proms appearances as Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (18 and 29 July), and Semyon Bychkov conducts Tristan and Isolde in his role as Günter Wand Conducting Chair of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (27 July).
Conductors making a welcome return to the Royal Albert Hall after a number of years include Daniel Harding, who leads the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in his first Prom performance for 10 years (30 July); Sian Edwards, who gives her first Prom since 1993, leading the Britten Sinfonia in a programme of British music (PSM 3 August) and Nicholas Kok, who conducts the Nash Ensemble in his first Prom since 2004 (PCM 12 August).
Robin Ticciati will for the fi rst time bring his own orchestra to the Proms when he performs with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (19 August) and Vasily Petrenko gives three Proms performances: the first ever free main-evening Prom, with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (11 August), and two appearances in his new role as Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (2 & 3 September).
