In this new series for BBC Two, Rick Stein embarks on a spectacular journey through the Indian sub-continent to discover the origins of dishes, ingredients and spices celebrated the world over.
Intent on finding the perfect curry, Rick discovers new taste sensations and dishes, some of which, have never appeared on a British curry house menu. The series will see him exploring the ethnic influences of Calcutta, the temple food of Tamil Nadu, house-boat hospitality in Kerala, the regal cooking of Rajasthan and the indulgence of India’s gourmet state - The Punjab.
He will offer viewers a feast of dishes influenced by India’s colourful history, captivating cultures and enthralling religious communities.
In the final programme, Rick puts “6 of the best” recipes discovered on his travels to a panel of curry aficionados in Bradford – will they prove equally appealing to British taste-buds and prove a worthy contender to the infamous Chicken Tikka Masala?
Rick Stein says: “No other food that I know gives the taste buds such a roller coaster ride long before you’ve even entered a restaurant. No wonder we, as a nation, have taken this amazing multi layered and multi-cultured food for our own. My gastronomic journey celebrates the best from the world of curry and dispenses with some of the myths – just the thought of flying to the Indian sub-continent to start filming is making my mouth water.”
The series (6x60) was commissioned by Janice Hadlow, Controller, BBC Two and Alison Kirkham, Commissioning Editor for Features and Formats, BBC One and Two. Arezoo Farahzad is associate producer for Denham Productions.
