In addition to the Asian Stars campaign, the BBC Asian Network will also be visiting a number of cities around the country as part of their Summer of Melas programme.

The station will be bringing live music, highlights, picture galleries, videos and performances from some of the best Asian artists to listeners on-air and online at as it visits festivals in Manchester, London and Newcastle.

Detailed broadcast programming will be announced in June.

Manchester Mega Mela, 14 and 15 July

Across the weekend, Platt Fields Park in Manchester will host the Manchester Mega Mela 2012 with a host of star artists and Asian Network broadcasts from around the city in the build up to the event. The BBC Asian Network will present highlights from across the weekend, with Breakfast and Afternoon presenters, Tommy Sandhu and Noreen Khan hosting the Main Stage. 

London Mela, 19 August

The BBC Asian Network will partner the London Mela for the seventh year. There will be an array of stages and activities and this year, there will be special Asian Network commission between the Philharmonia Orchestra and a range of South Asian artists and musicians. The festival, as always, will host a strong line-up of Asian Stars and emerging talent across the Main Stage, Mix Tent and BBC Introducing stage, hosted by Bobby Friction. BBC Asian Network will be broadcasting from West London in the week building up to Europe’s biggest Mela, as well as live from the Main Stage during the Event.

Newcastle Mela, 26 and 27 August

Taking place at Exhibition Park, the BBC Asian Network will bring highlights from the Newcastle Mela, which will play host to a line-up of Asian A-listers and BBC Introducing Desi talent from the North-East.

BBC Red Button

Following the success of past Mela Music Red Button programmes, the station will present another offering in September 2012, featuring highlights, performances and exclusive content from the summer festivals. Broadcast details will be announced early summer.
