On Friday 23 May from 6pm, Radio 1 will be broadcasting live from George Square in Glasgow and DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard will be joined by special guests Tiesto and Martin Garrix to host a massive party in the city and kick-off the celebrations for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

Fourteen thousand tickets for the free event at George Square were given away to music fans last month and were snapped up in less than 40 minutes.

Tiesto said: “I can’t wait to party with everyone in Glasgow at Radio 1’s Big Weekend! See you all soon."

Martin Garrix said: “I'm super super excited to be part of Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow this year. The support from Radio 1 on my tracks was amazing the last year and I'm looking forward to playing for my fans in the UK again!"

Jason Carter, Head of Live Events and Music at BBC, said: “This year’s Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be the biggest line-up we have ever delivered. The weekend will begin with some of the best DJs in the world, in a brilliant city centre setting with 14,000 young people enjoying what promises to be a fantastic show.”

As with previous Big Weekends, tickets were geographically weighted with an element of preference given to local residents: 50 per cent of tickets were reserved for those living within the area covered by Glasgow City Council; 45 per cent were reserved for those residents in the rest of Scotland; with the remaining five per cent for other audiences across the UK.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be visiting Glasgow to celebrate the city’s hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and will be produced in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

The event is part of the BBC’s year-long contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The BBC is the domestic broadcaster for Glasgow 2014 and in addition to comprehensive sports coverage during the Games in July and August, the Corporation has also unveiled a wide-ranging package of on-air and off-air output and events throughout 2014.
