BBC Three will for the first time make all episodes of a new series available on BBC iPlayer ahead of its linear transmission. All six episodes of Jonah From Tonga, the new series from the writer and star of Summer Heights High and Ja'mie: Private School Girl, will be made available on BBC iPlayer from Friday 2 May for 48 hours.

The show will then air on BBC Three from Thursday 8 May. This forms part of an international simulcast with ABC Australia’s internet TV service iview.

Jonah From Tonga takes us on an adventurous journey into the life of 14-year-old rebellious schoolboy Jonah Takalua (Lilley), his family, friends and the crew of teachers and counsellors who are exhaustively trying to help him channel his seemingly limitless energy into bigger and brighter things.

Victoria Jaye, Head of TV Content, BBC iPlayer, said: “This is BBC iPlayer’s first collaboration with an international broadcaster to create an online TV event. For 48 hours only, iPlayer audiences will be given access to all episodes of Chris Lilley’s new comedy series ‘Jonah From Tonga’. We’re excited to see how this digital event sets light to social media activity from fans both here and on the other side of the world.”

When we last caught up with Jonah he was expelled from Summer Heights High, causing his father Rocky to banish him back to his native Tonga to teach him a hard life lesson. After serving his time in Tonga, his father and aunty decide to start a brand-new life for the boy with ‘angel eyes’ at Holy Cross - a Catholic high school in Sydney’s western suburbs.

Jonah might be in a brand-new school but he’s quick to mark his familiar territory and establishes a gang of like-minded kids who are friendly with all except ‘The Rangas’. Under the watchful eye of his teachers and the school’s youth worker, Jonah finds it harder to rebel, but he is never one to shy away from a challenge.

It’s not long until he’s up to his old tricks and the Tongan troublemaker once again finds himself in plenty of hot water. With stacks of fights, frenemies, break-dancing and law-breaking, Jonah From Tonga is definitely one big wild ride.

Jonah From Tonga is produced by Princess Pictures and Chris Lilley in conjunction with ABC TV.

About BBC iPlayer

Launching on December 2007 as a simple catch-up website, BBC iPlayer has helped pioneer TV on demand by offering audiences the opportunity to watch selected BBC programmes for up to 7 days after broadcast, rising to 30 days in summer 2014. Since launch there has been over 10bn programme requests with 3bn of those in 2013 alone and 30m downloads of the BBC iPlayer and BBC iPlayer Radio apps.

BBC iPlayer has since evolved, adding exclusive iPlayer only programmes, entire series and films, radio programmes, live TV channels and radio stations, programme downloads for offline viewing and premiering selected programmes on iPlayer before they are broadcast on TV.

BBC iPlayer is now available on over 1,000 devices and platforms across four screens; computers, mobiles, tablets and connected TVs, allowing audiences to catch up or watch live wherever they are and on whatever device – offering access on the move over 3G and Wi-Fi , or simple and convenient access via broadband on the living room TV.
