The opening episode of Hinterland - BBC Cymru Wales’ gripping new TV detective series starring Richard Harrington as DCI Tom Mathias - was a big success with viewers, according to preliminary audience figures and feedback.

Shown on Saturday, 4 January on BBC One Wales, latest figures indicate that at least 350,000 viewers have seen the first programme, including those who have viewed recordings subsequently on their TVs - more than double the viewers in Wales for any other TV programme shown at the same time.

The episode was rated among the most highly appreciated BBC One shows during the Christmas and New Year period. Feedback on social media and on the BBC’s website has also been overwhelmingly positive.

Mathias’s first case, having just transferred from the Met in London to Aberystwyth, involved a murder with a missing body, with the investigation leading to dark secrets being revealed about a former children’s home.

The Welsh language version of the series, Y Gwyll, was broadcast in October and November on S4C. The BBC One Wales version features dialogue in both English and Welsh and is the first time both languages have played a prominent role in a drama series broadcast by the BBC. The Welsh language elements have on-screen subtitles.

The series is also due to be shown on BBC Four later in 2014.

Adrian Davies, BBC Cymru Wales’s Head of English Language Programmes and Services says: “I’m delighted that Hinterland has started so successfully on BBC One Wales. It’s clear that there’s substantial goodwill towards this groundbreaking series, and the audience figures confirm the appeal of its unique mix of high quality drama, stunning landscapes and bilingual dialogue.”

In episode two, to be shown on Monday, 13 January at 9pm on BBC One Wales, and concluding after the news at 10.35pm, DCI Mathias is called to investigate the murder of a 69-year-old farmer, uncovering a bloody history in the mountains.

Hinterland is made by Fiction Factory for BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with S4C.
