BBC North and Liverpool Museums have joined forces to bring the latest project of one of the worlds leading photographers, Rankin, to The Walker and BBC Two's The Culture Show.

Best known for his compelling portraits of modern icons, 'Alive: In the Face of Death' sees the photographer focus his lens on members of the UK public who are living with a terminal illness.

Rankin said: “This is one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever been involved in and looks at life in the face of death. The issue of death is emotive. Part of this exhibition has involved me taking photographs of people with terminal illness which has been quite a challenging process. I’ve met some amazing people and I think each portrait brings out the vitality of each subject, their humour and unique qualities.”

With unique access to the photographer as he undertakes this emotional journey, Rankin: A Culture Show Special will follow the artist from the point he first meets his subjects to the moment he records their life in a picture. This one-hour documentary for BBC Two will reveal an intimate and unprecedented portrait of perhaps one of the most famous photographer's living today.

The project was born out of a two-year creative collaboration spearheaded by BBC North with The Walker. BBC North has a successful track record of supporting and collaborating on a wide range of events across the North of England. Previous projects have included, The Preston Passion for BBC One Easter 2012, BBC Philharmonic Presents season 2011/12, Jesting About with BBC Comedy 2011/12 and forthcoming Bollywood Live for BBC Three, June 2013.

Speaking about the development of the project, Pat Connor, Head of BBC North Development and Events, said: "Our collaboration with Rankin and The Walker is a unique opportunity to bring together different creative media - photography, television, and digital - to create a moment where the public have the privilege to share something incredibly personal. BBC North is privileged to be able to work with a photographer of Rankin's status and to bring the extraordinary stories of all involved in this project to a wider audience."
