The One Show Summer Festival announced for Weston-super-Mare
We can’t wait to bring The One Show Summer Festival to Weston-super-Mare. This two-day event is set to be a huge celebration of the area with activities for all the family to enjoy, plus the chance to watch The One Show’s live broadcast from 7pm on Wednesday 7 August.”Moray London, Executive Producer, BBC Learning
The One Show, BBC One’s flagship programme, has teamed up with BBC Learning to produce a two-day event on 6 and 7 August, which is packed full of activities for all the family and filled with familiar One Show faces and topics.
The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Matt Baker will present a live episode of the show on Wednesday 7 August at 7pm direct from Weston seafront.
The free family event is open to all and visitors will be invited to take part in all kinds of activities on The One Show Summer Festival stage. These will include The One Show choir, which will undertake a seaside-themed medley led by Carrie Grant, and the chance to pick up a few signature moves with a Strictly-esque inspired dance class.
Also on the main stage, our wildlife show reflects our host town, with a cross-section of Weston wildlife, from barn owls to rats, polecats to kestrels. Our science demonstrations explore marine science through bursting foam, billowing gas and exploding rockets.
The festival will be made up of zoned areas – personal finance, history, art, sport and science – hosted by some of The One Show presenters alongside local experts. These will offer the opportunity for visitors to gain some essential tips and advice; enhance their knowledge of Weston-super-Mare’s history; learn how to improve their personal finances, develop their seaside sporting skills and discover more about local wildlife. Everything combines in a real Weston-specific free, family day out. Plus there’ll be the chance to help create the ultimate seaside mural, reflecting Weston past and present, which will remain on the Grand Pier all summer.
Alex Jones comments: “The One Show Summer Festival will be two fantastic days at the seaside. I can’t wait to get back to Weston-super-Mare again; I’ve only been once before and it was a scorcher of a day, so I’m fully expecting the same weather this year!”
Moray London, Executive Producer for BBC Learning, says: “We can’t wait to bring The One Show Summer Festival to Weston-super-Mare. This two-day event is set to be a huge celebration of the area with activities for all the family to enjoy, plus the chance to watch The One Show’s live broadcast from 7pm on Wednesday 7 August.”
The One Show Summer Festival Zones
Consumer Finance Zone
Highly interactive, everything in the consumer finance zone is aimed at arming consumers with practical information to apply immediately in their own lives. Our panel of finance experts will help visitors to find out more about a range of money matters: from getting the most from your holiday cash to knowing your rights and safe borrowing. Meanwhile, our fun, engaging Lingo Bingo game demystifies the small print.
Local characters, experts and storytellers bring the history of Weston-super-Mare to life. The 'Big Dig’ gives families the chance to become archaeologists for the day as they delve into Weston’s past with fossils and artefacts. Crack the Morse code, then go head-to-head with the texters in a text-speak showdown. From Semaphore to seaside Victoriana, the Penny Lick and postcards: everything you’d want to know about Weston’s past.
The art zone features an exciting mass participation art project: a huge Weston-themed seaside ‘cut-out’ photo board to which everyone is invited to contribute their art skills. Once complete, you’re invited to stick your face through the hole and capture a summer memory. The board will be relocated to the Grand Pier for the rest of the summer.
Meanwhile, for those looking for more than the usual seaside sandcastle, experts are on hand to help budding sand sculptors learn how to make the perfect sand sculpture: from donkey heads to Weston’s wheel.
Trying something new as a family is at the heart of our Sports Zone. Have a go at sailing and windsurfing without getting wet – the secret’s in the simulators – and beat the rest in winching and knot-tying challenges. Also in this area: RNLI beach activities plus football, volleyball and bowls on the beach.
Building on the festival stage science show, experimentation is the theme of the science zone. The Good, The Bad and The Slimy introduces the amazing world of algae and seaweed, while visitors can also meet lookalike life-sized marine creatures, make their own ice-cream and meet the plant doctors.
The One Show Summer Festival, Weston-super-Mare will take place on 6 and 7 of August, 2013. The event is free and family-friendly and will be situated on Weston seafront. No tickets will be needed.
