BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music hit new highs and BBC digital stations continue to show long-term growth, according to figures published today by RAJAR.

Radio 2 posted a record reach of 15.1 million listeners a week last quarter – up from 13.9m last quarter and 14.3m last year.

Its share for the quarter reached 17.6% - up from 15.6% last quarter and 16.3% last year – and the Chris Evans Breakfast Show hit 9.52 million weekly listeners (from 8.55m last quarter and 8.86m last year).

BBC Radio 6 Music extended its weekly reach year on year by 31% to 1.89 million, up from 1.62m last quarter and 1.44m last year.

Radio 5 live’s digital station, Sports Extra, showed 37.5% year-on-year growth to reach 847,000 listeners a week. This was down from its record Olympics quarter of 1m but up from 616,000 last year.

Radio 4’s sister network 4 Extra was up 8.4% year on year 1.69 million from 1.55m. Its quarterly reach fell marginally from 1.69m. Reach for the urban music station 1Xtra was up 2.7% on last year at 1.04 million (from 1.02 last year but down on 1.11 last quarter).

The figures for the survey period (September 17 – December 16 2012) show that, across the industry, 33% of all radio listening was via digital platforms, up from 31.3% last quarter and 29.1% last year.

The number of people claiming to have ever listened to radio via mobile phone grew to 37.6% (from 34.4% last quarter and 32.2% last year).

The figures show all BBC Radio reached 35.19 million people every week (from 34.66m last quarter and 34.94m last year) and posted a share of 55.3% (54.2% last quarter and 55.5% last year).

Radio 1 reaches 11.09 million listeners every week – compared to 11.20m last quarter and 11.67m last year – and has a share of 7.4%, from 8.2% last quarter and 8.5% last year. The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw has attracted 6.69 million listeners every week in its first full quarter – from 6.73m last quarter and 7.24m last year. Among listeners aged 10 and over reach was 11.96 million (from 12.21m last quarter and 12.66m last year).

Radio 3 has 2.06 million weekly listeners – compared to 2.15m last quarter and 2.10m last year. The network’s share is steady at 1.3%, the same as last quarter and last year.

Radio 4 posted a weekly audience of 10.75 million, from 10.85m last quarter and 10.83m last year. Its share is 12.5%, matching the figure for both last quarter and last year. The Today programme has 7.05 million listeners each week, from 6.94m last quarter and 7.15m last year.

BBC Radio 5 live recorded a reach of 6.12 million, from 6.10m last quarter and 6.23m last year and combined reach with sister station 5 live sports extra of 6.27 million listeners (6.32m last quarter and 6.34m last year). Its share is 4.3%, from 4.4% last quarter and 4.3% last year.

The BBC Asian Network posted a weekly reach of 453,000 listeners, from 584,000 last quarter and 472,000 last year.

BBC World Service posted a UK reach of 1.46 million (1.39m for both last quarter and last year), while BBC Local / Regional radio reached 9.14 million listeners per week - from 8.96m last quarter and 9.60m last year.
