Today at Salford Media City, Manchester’s two biggest professional orchestras will join together for a classically inspired girls v boys ‘Musical Battle’ for BBC Children in Need.

The BBC Philharmonic and the Hallé will divide into all-male and all-female orchestras who, alongside five male singers and five female singers, will perform reimagined classical versions of two recent pop hits by arranger Steve Pycroft.

  • Verdi’s Anvil Chorus

  • Little Mix’s Wings
  • Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries

The five female classical singers, all-female orchestra and conductor Sian Edwards will record an arrangement of Little Mix’s Wings meets Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries; while the five male classical singers and conductor Clark Rundell will record a classical arrangement of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful meets Verdi’s Anvil Chorus, backed by an all-male orchestra.
