Today at Salford Media City, Manchester’s two biggest professional orchestras will join together for a classically inspired girls v boys ‘Musical Battle’ for BBC Children in Need.

The BBC Philharmonic and the Hallé will divide into all-male and all-female orchestras who, alongside five male singers and five female singers, will perform reimagined classical versions of two recent pop hits by arranger Steve Pycroft.

Boys

  • One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful
  • Verdi’s Anvil Chorus

Girls

  • Little Mix’s Wings
  • Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries

The five female classical singers, all-female orchestra and conductor Sian Edwards will record an arrangement of Little Mix’s Wings meets Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries; while the five male classical singers and conductor Clark Rundell will record a classical arrangement of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful meets Verdi’s Anvil Chorus, backed by an all-male orchestra.

Taking on Little Mix and Wagner for the girls are mezzo-soprano and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Kitty Whately, soprano and winner of the London Handel singing competition Ruby Hughes, Spanish-born mezzo-soprano and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Clara Mouriz, soprano and winner of the Borletti Buitoni Trust Award Elizabeth Watts, and soprano Charlotte Trepess.

In the boys’ corner, ready to get their voices around the One Direction/Verdi arrangement are tenor and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Robin Tritschler, baritone and Royal Academy of Music Alumnus Jonathan McGovern, German-born baritone and winner of Deutsche Schubert Gesellschaft Schubertpreis Benjamin Appl, countertenor and founding member of The Prince Consort Tim Mead, and Tenor and winner of the Best Supporting Actor at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival Nick Pritchard.

Both tracks will be arranged for singers and full orchestra by Steve Pycroft, who composed BBC Radio 3’s recent Baroque version of Justin Bieber’s Beauty And A Beat for Comic Relief, which after its Radio 3 broadcast became an online success: youtube.com/watch?v=hZF3hbybazU
