In its first decade over one million songs have been played across BBC Radio 6 Music’s airwaves. Now the station is asking its listeners to crown one track the greatest song released in 6 Music’s lifetime.

The 6 Music team – presenters, producers, researchers – have shortlisted 100 songs, all released between March 2002 and the end of 2012. Now the call goes out to listeners to vote for the track they believe to be the pinnacle of musical achievement during this time.

Steve Lamacq launches the vote in his show on Monday 7 January, and the online canvassing will close on Friday 25 January. Then, once all the votes have been compiled and counted, on Friday 1 February, 6 Music will play out the Top 100 in order. Starting in Shaun Keaveny's Breakfast show, it will culminate in Steve Lamacq’s show, revealing the ultimate greatest hit during his show that evening.

6 Music presenter, Lauren Laverne says: “We started with over 2,000 tracks on our list and have gradually whittled it down to 100, losing several of our personal favourites on the way. Now we need our listeners to help decide which track should be crowned the definitive song of 6 Music’s lifetime. Log on to the 6 Music website and have your say.”
