BBC Swahili will launch its TV news and current-affairs programme, Dira ya Dunia (World Compass), on Raga TV in the Democratic Republic of Congo with a special live broadcast from Kinshasa on Monday 3 June.

To be aired by Raga TV at 7.30pm local time Monday to Friday, Dira ya Dunia brings 30 minutes of the latest global news and analysis from one of the world’s leading international broadcasters.

Drawing on the BBC’s strong presence across the continent, with correspondents in 48 African countries, as well as the BBC’s unparalleled global newsgathering network, Dira ya Dunia provides Kiswahili-speaking audiences with access to world-class news content.

Long known to millions of radio listeners across East and Central Africa, Dira ya Dunia was launched as a TV programme in the summer of 2012. Presented by Salim Kikeke, Charles Hilary, Kassim Kayira and Peter Musembi, Dira ya Dunia features BBC Swahili journalists based in DR Congo as well as in Burundi, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and the UK.

The special edition of Dira ya Dunia from Kinshasa will include in-depth reports, interviews and analysis from DR Congo. BBC Swahili Editor, Ali Saleh, says: “Around 2.1 million people in DR Congo listen to the BBC Swahili radio every week, and we are thrilled that, thanks to partnership with Raga TV, our new TV programme will now deliver the BBC’s independent, unbiased reporting to Kiswahili-speaking TV audiences here.”

Dira ya Dunia lead presenter, Salim Kikeke, adds: “I am looking forward to connecting with new TV audiences in DR Congo, hoping they will come to Dira ya Dunia on Raga TV to live the regional and global news stories with the BBC.”

Raga Media SPRL is one of the pioneers in the AV sector of DR Congo. The agreement to rebroadcast Dira ya Dunia on Raga TV stems from BBC World Service’s well-established distribution partnership with Raga FM, which brings the BBC’s radio content in French and Kiswahili to radio audiences throughout the country on 90.5 FM.

Managing Director of the Raga Group, Philippe Israel, comments: “I am proud to announce the launch on Raga TV of the BBC Swahili TV programme Dira ya Dunia which is specifically designed for our Kiswahili-speaking audience. This is a continuation of an already fruitful existing partnership between the BBC and Raga Group with the objective to continuously provide our audiences with premium news content, whether it is on the radio or television.”
