Thomas Søndergård will give his first concert as Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Friday 12 October, at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall.

Announced as Principal Conductor of the Orchestra in July 2011, Thomas Søndergård will hold the position for an initial term of four years. Søndergård is particularly admired for his interpretations of Scandinavian and contemporary repertoire.

The concert’s highlight is a performance of Sibelius’s Symphony No 5 – one of his best-known works, with its glorious sweeping melodies and a majestic final movement.

As Thomas Søndergård explains, it’s a work he is looking forward to performing in Cardiff: “I’m thrilled to be able to perform one of my favourite pieces in my first concert as Principal Conductor. For me, Sibelius' Fifth symphony is about achieving an over-arching sense of space and wonderment in the music - I hope you will be surrounded by beautiful sounds.”

As part of the evening of music by composers from northern Europe, fellow Dane Inger Dam-Jensen, winner of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 1993, will take to the stage to perform a varied collection of songs by Richard Strauss and Grieg.

The first half of the concert also features Richard Strauss’s famous showpiece Till Eulenspiegel, and Expo by Finland’s Magnus Lindberg – “a composer I know that I’ll be doing a lot of in the future”, according to Søndergård.

Tickets for the concert at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on Friday 12 October, 7.30pm, are £10-£27.50 (discounts available) and are available from Orchestra’s Audience Line, by calling 0800 052 1812.

Alternatively, tickets can be booked through the St David’s Hall Box Office on 02920 878444.
