Zai Bennett, Controller, BBC Three, and Kristian Smith, Executive Editor, Comedy Commissioning, have commissioned The Comedy Unit, a Zodiak Media Company, to produce a brand new studio sitcom series for BBC Three written and performed by smash hit UK comedy trio Pappy’s.
The 6x30-minute sitcom with a working title of The Secret Dude Society will start filming at Glasgow’s BBC Pacific Quay studios in the New Year.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival regulars Pappy’s are formed of Tom Parry, Matthew Crosby and Ben Clark and the new studio comedy sees the trio get up to a whole host of hilarious adventures at home, at work and in love.
Best known for their sketch antics, Pappy’s five-star fringe show, Last Show Ever, was nominated for the prestigious Edinburgh comedy award earlier this year, and the show is currently touring around the UK before the trio head to Glasgow to start filming the caper driven series.
Zai Bennett said: “The Secret Dude Society with Pappy’s has fantastic energy and a super high gag rate. It’s the first a studio sitcom we’ve green lit in years on BBC Three and should complement our on-going comedy renaissance.”
Kristian Smith said: “I am thrilled that Matthew, Ben and Tom (who together are, the fantastic Pappy’s Fun Club) are coming to BBC Three in their first sitcom. Pappy’s have long delighted audiences on the comedy circuit, and I’m made up they have got their own series to excite both their fans and new audiences alike.”
Gavin Smith, Creative Director, Comedy Unit, said: “We’ve long been fans of Pappy’s amazing live shows, so it’s been great to work with them on taking their on-stage personas and finding a sitcom world for them to inhabit which still has room for all the mayhem they convey to a live audience. We can’t wait to get in the studio to do something a bit silly and a bit special.”
The commission follows a history of successful single camera shows for the Comedy Unit with talent who have performed live and transitioned to screen, including Greg McHugh – Gary: Tank Commander (BBC Scotland, Channel 4, BBC Three), Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill – Still Game (BBC Two) and Brian ‘Limmy’ Limond (BBC Scotland).
Comedy Unit MD, Rab Christie, took the helm of the Glasgow-based indie at the end of last year, and this network commission marks a renewed commitment from Zodiak UK to build its comedy output. Fellow Zodiak indie Bwark expect to announce a major network commission imminently and as well as Pappy’s, Comedy Unit have a series two commission of Sketchorama for BBC Radio 4, along with a Comedy Blap for Channel 4 later this year.
Meanwhile, Comedy Unit’s BBC Scotland business continues with series three of Gary: Tank Commander and Limmy’s Show airing later this year and the third series of sketch hit Burnistoun, transmitting now on BBC One Scotland, which has received rave reviews for its third series.
The Secret Dude Society is a Comedy Unit production, the Executive Producers are Rab Christie and Gavin Smith, the Executive Producer for BBC is Kristian Smith.
