On Monday 9 April, in a special one-off documentary for Radio 5 live, Reggie Yates examines the effects of growing up in a single parent household and asks Is Mum Enough?
Brought up without a father, Reggie was very close to his Mum and believes he had all the support and love he needed, but is now starting to question whether he was one of the lucky ones and wonders how not having a father in the home has shaped him.
In this authored feature Reggie speaks to friends, family and role models, and talks intimately about key moments in his life including bumping into his father for the first time and his own fears about becoming a Dad.
During an emotional interview with his first television executive, Reggie explains how his guidance helped him through the most difficult time in his life. He also tracks down old school friends, Tyrone and Terry, who had the same start in life as Reggie, to find out where their lives have led and how they have been affected by growing up without a Dad.
Commenting on making the documentary, Reggie said: “This has been a deeply personal and educational experience that had me venture into difficult territory. Being a private person, my personal life isn't something I tend to discuss, but I feel that the subject matter of this programme really could start some interesting conversations and hopefully make people think.”
Is Mum Enough? will broadcast from 12.00noon to 1.00pm on Monday 9 April on BBC Radio 5 live.
Following the documentary, Reggie will join 5 live’s Stephen Nolan for a one hour phone-in to talk about the issues raised in the programme and to give listeners the opportunity to share their stories.
You can listen to BBC Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra via digital radio, online at bbc.co.uk/5live, Digital Freeview, Sky, Freesat, Virgin Media and 909 & 693AM.
