BBC Radio Cymru breakfast show presenters, Dafydd Du and Caryl Parry Jones, have set themselves the challenge of climbing five Welsh peaks in just five days from Monday 29 October to Friday 2 November, while raising as much money as possible for Children in Need.

The challenge kicks off on Monday 29 October at Theatre Brycheiniog Café, Tipple and Tiffin, before the first climb - South Wales’ highest peak, Pen y fan. The second mountain on the list of conquests will be Carningli mountain in Pembrokeshire on Tuesday 30 October. On the morning of the climb, Daf and Caryl will be broadcasting live from Café Beca, Efailwen. The following morning’s destination is Roberts Café, Dolgellau (Wednesday 1 November) and a mid-week challenge - climbing 893 metres (2,930 feet) to Cadair Idris.

There’s a well-deserved rest for the team as it travels to north Wales ready for the morning broadcast from Moel Famau between Denbighshire and Flintshire (Thursday 2 November) and then on the last day (Friday 3 November), it’s the biggest challenge. Following their broadcast from Y Pantri, Llanberis in the morning they’ll tackle the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon.

“Daf asked what we should do as a challenge,” says Caryl Parry Jones, “and I suggested we attempt something we don’t often do on this programme... moving! And moving is what we’re going to do - move a lot more than usual. The whole team - Daf, myself, Derfel and Sian (Miss Producer) - is looking forward to the climbing, sweating, laughing, crying, the plasters and the hot baths at the end of each day. And of course, to raise as much money as possible for Children in Need.”

There will be special guests each morning and possibly one or two volunteers to join the team in their challenge. The courageous climbers will join Nia’s programme from 2.30pm every afternoon to report on the day’s activities from the mountains and the hope is that listeners at home will support BBC Children in Need by texting each day.

The money raised for BBC Children in Need will go to support some of the most disadvantaged children and young people right here in the UK. To find out more, please visit bbc.co.uk/radiocymru.
