The awards celebrate the talent and achievements of young brass players from around the UK, and the three category recipients will now perform in one showcase event, which provides a platform for young musicians who have striven to reach the highest standards, both individually and collectively.
The three Young Brass Awards 2013 categories are Player of the Year Under 18, Player of the Year Under 21 and Youth Brass Band of the Year. In recognition of receiving the award in their category, the recipients will take part in a performance at a special concert taking place at the Royal Northern College of Music’s Festival of Brass in January 2013, which will be broadcast on Radio 2 shortly afterwards.
They category recipients are:
Player of the Year Under 18: Thomas Fountain (16) Cornet and Flugel
Player of the Year Under 21: Josiah Walters (20) Bass Trombone
Youth Brass Band of the Year: Youth Brass 2000
A panel of experts in the brass music field selected the youth band and two players whose contribution over the previous 12 months has been outstanding. They will receive the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2013 in each of the separate categories. Additionally, at the Festival of Brass concert, the panel will also name one overall recipient of BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2013, and this soloist or band will be given a further performance opportunity on Radio 2.
Bob Shennan, Controller of BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: “BBC Radio 2 is committed to broadcasting a distinctive and diverse range of music. These awards are a celebration of the hugely talented musicians who took part.”
Paul Hindmarsh, Festival of Brass Director, says: “The RNCM Festival of Brass is delighted to host the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Awards for a second time following last year's successful first partnership. They are a wonderful recognition of outstanding musical talent.”
