BBC Cymru Wales’ flagship sports magazine programme Sport Wales returns for the new season from Friday 17 August, with a new look and a new presenter - BBC Cymru Wales’ Dot Davies.
The new series of Sport Wales takes the team out and about around Wales and beyond. The programme follows the top Welsh sport stories wherever they are that week - anywhere from Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham to Manchester or London.
“The idea is that we lead the way,” says Dot. “Whatever the main sporting interests are that week we’ll be there on site to talk to sportsmen, coaches, athletes and fans to get the very latest in what’s going on, all wrapped up in one programme that covers all sports.”
Dot, who was born and brought up in Blaenannerch near Cardigan in west Wales, is the pitch-side reporter for BBC Cymru Wales’ rugby programme for S4C, Y Clwb Rygbi, and is also a sports reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.
After finishing her degree in Welsh and journalism at Cardiff University, Dot joined BBC Cymru Wales as a researcher in radio in 2001. She started her broadcasting career presenting radio sports bulletins and her big break came as a tennis and rugby reporter for BBC Radio 5 Live.
Dot is looking forward to getting out and about with the Sport Wales team around Wales for the new season.
“It’s a unique chance to meet all these great sports people and a dream come true for a sports fan. If somebody told me when I was 16 that I’d be getting to present a programme like this about all sport in Wales I would have laughed, because I never would have dreamt that a farmer's daughter from Blaenannerch would get a job like this. I still can’t quite believe it, it’s really exciting and I’m sure we’ll get some really great people on the show.”
The former presenter of Sport Wales, Jason Mohammad, hands over the reins to Dot: he is to play a central role in BBC Radio Wales’s new schedule which launches in September, with a brand new morning show every weekday.
“I wish all of the Sport Wales team all the very best for the forthcoming season after four very enjoyable and successful years with the programme,” says Jason. “I look forward to continuing my work presenting football and rugby with BBC Cymru Wales.”
