BBC Radio 6 Music, which champions the very best in rock and popular music, was launched on 11 March 2002 by Lesley Douglas, former Controller of Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music. It was the BBC’s first new national music radio station in 32 years.

Awarded National Station of the Year 2011 at the Music Week awards, and proud owner of multiple Sony Radio Academy Awards, the digital station has gone from strength to strength over the past decade. It is the UK’s biggest digital-only station, attracting 1.44 million listeners each week (Q4 2011 RAJAR).

In March 2010, the BBC Executive proposed that Radio 6 Music should be closed as part of its strategy review. The following consultation triggered an outpouring of public support for the station and in July 2010, the BBC Trust announced that Radio 6 Music would be saved from closure.

For the past 10 years, the station has been home to many talented presenters and musicians, including Cerys Matthews, Lauren Laverne, Guy Garvey, and Sony-award winning Jarvis Cocker, who have all joined the network in recent years. The original starting line-up included Liz Kershaw, Andrew Collins, Craig Charles and Gideon Coe. Phill Jupitus was the first voice heard on the station when he opened the mic for the network’s breakfast show.

The current daytime line-up, Shaun Keaveny, Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe and Maconie and Steve Lamacq, has taken the network to record figures.

Southbank Centre is the UK’s largest arts centre, occupying a 21-acre site that sits in the midst of London’s most vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames. The site has an extraordinary creative and architectural history stretching back to the 1951 Festival of Britain. Southbank Centre is home to the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery as well as The Saison Poetry Library and the Arts Council Collection.
