BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller Ben Cooper today announced a number of changes to 1Xtra’s schedule which will see rising star Charlie Sloth take over the station’s weekday early evening show, while new signing Yasmin Evans joins the network to present the weekend Breakfast Show.
- New drive time show for Charlie Sloth
- New weekend breakfast show presenter
- New Sunday show for Tim Westwood
Speaking about his new show Charlie said: “I’m very excited about being given the opportunity to speak to the nation for five days a week and for the faith put in me by the Radio 1Xtra team.”
Yasmin, 21 from Manchester, makes her national radio debut, following her successful development through 1Xtra’s pilot scheme, which is part of the station’s ongoing commitment to developing young new talent.
Talking about joining the station Yasmin said: “I’m incredibly excited and very thankful for all the effort that everyone has put in, which has allowed me to get this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to get started!”
As part of the changes Tim Westwood gets a brand new Sunday show on 1Xtra from 7-9pm and he will continue to present his seminal Saturday night show, simulcast across Radio 1 and 1Xtra, which brings listeners all the latest hip-hop news and sounds.
Tim Westwood said: “It’s been a lot of fun and a great experience.”
In changes to the late night schedule the station’s specialist shows will broadcast across extended timeslots of 10pm-2am weekdays. On Mondays CJ Beatz’s RnB Mix moves to an earlier timeslot of 10pm-2am and Crissy Criss’s Drum n Bass Mix also moves to an earlier timeslot of 10pm-2am on Wednesdays. Cameo, Robbo Ranx and Semtex will continue with their weekday night shows on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday respectively.
From 2-4am weekdays 1Xtra will simulcast with Radio 1, continuing the two stations’ commitment to bring listeners the best in specialist music. 1Xtra’s successful Saturday night take over of Radio 1 will continue with Trevor Nelson, Westwood, Mistajam, Diplo & Friends, Friction and a new show from Seani B.
Alongside Yasmin and Tim Westwood’s addition to the weekend schedule, Nick Bright will now present the mid-morning show from 10am-1pm. DJ Target will move to present a new show across the weekend from 4-7pm alongside his Friday night show, while Edu will present a regular Sunday show from 10pm-2am and B.Traits will present a new show between 2am-4am on Sundays.
Ben Cooper said: “As 1Xtra nears its 10th birthday it’s great to be welcoming a new generation of presenters to the station who will take on the baton of championing the best in urban music for a young audience.
“Tim has proved to be one of the most influential figures in UK hip-hop and I’m delighted that he will continue to bring his wealth of knowledge and unique style to Radio 1 and 1Xtra across the weekends.”
The changes to the schedule will come into effect from September this year.
As part of the changes a number of 1Xtra’s programmes will be put out to tender with independent production companies pitching to produce content across the station. This process will contribute to BBC Audio & Music's target of having a 10% independent production quota and 10% WoCC (Window Of Creative Competition) across the whole of Audio & Music by 2012/13.
The programmes opened up to independent production companies are: CJ Beatz, Cameo, Crissy Criss, Robbo, Semtex, Edu and Seani B.
