CBBC Productions has added three new commissions to its in-house factual and entertainment slates – in a first for the popular duo, Dick and Dom are turning their attention to the world of inventions, celebrating some of the world’s most important inventors and scientists in Absolute Genius; new game show DareDevils puts families to the test to see what they are prepared to do to win unique prizes; and Earth Shock explores the true power of planet Earth.

Key CBBC talent Dick and Dom will host a brand new format, Dick And Dom’s Absolute Genius, a 10x30-minute series executive produced by Newsround editor Owenna Griffiths, in which they investigate the work of important inventors and scientists in history.

The show takes the CBBC audience on a fun, irreverent, fact-laden, explosion filled journey into our past and future. From Da Vinci to Galileo, from Brunel to Stephenson, this series will explore their amazing work and conduct experiments on inventions and scientific theories that have shaped the world we live in.

In brand new 13x30-minute commission DareDevils, executive produced by Simon Marsh, kids’ families and friends are set challenges by the DareDevil to win money-can’t-buy prizes.

The DareDevil will research his contestant’s family and friends thoroughly, digging deep to uncover their passions, likes, dislikes, phobias and fears and will then craft a devilish dare for each individual. This is chaos and calamity with heart, testing whether contestants’ families will go that extra mile and face their fears to help them win a once-in-a-lifetime prize.

The in-house production team has secured a two series deal for ambitious new factual series Earthshock, executive produced by Gurdip Bhangoo, which fuses experts, experiments and personal testimonies, showing the true power of planet Earth.

From hurricanes to earthquakes, from tsunamis to lightning strikes, Earthshock will show children what it would be like to experience some of nature’s most destructive forces. Shot on location, the team of Earthshock presenters travel the globe to tell the stories and science behind types of extreme weather and natural events.

Earthshock will contrast the majesty and beauty of planet Earth with its awesome destructive power. Amongst the jaw dropping archive, amazing experiments and compelling, life changing stories each episode will also be crammed with incredible facts and trivia.

All three shows have been developed by CBBC Productions' in-house development team led by Creative Director Bill Hobbins.

In returning series, comedy Sadie J has been commissioned for a third series and factual comedy Vic Reeves’ Ministry Of Curious Stuff has been commissioned for a 13x30-minute second series.

Head of CBBC Productions Helen Bullough says: “We're really excited about these latest commissions - they're fresh and different in their subject matter and approaches, and genuinely in tune with what fascinates and entertains our young viewers.

“They also underline the team's commitment to bringing fresh new talent to the channel as well as delighting kids by developing established popular presenters like Dick and Dom in surprising new ways.”

The new shows were ordered by former Children’s Controller, Damian Kavanagh, and will all broadcast next year.
