Mission and values

Mission

We believe in the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in understanding their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world.

We work in partnership to provide access to useful, timely, reliable information. We help people make sense of events, engage in dialogue, and take action to improve their lives.

Values

Trust

Trust is a founding principle of BBC Media Action. We are open and transparent. Integrity is core to our ways of working.

Audiences

Our audiences are at the heart of all we do. They include the journalists and others we train, as well as listeners and viewers. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities.

We enable people to share their views and ideas, providing access to those whose voices are often unheard.

Quality

We find appropriate, creative and cost-effective solutions that achieve lasting impact, by bringing together people and ideas from development and media.

Creativity

Creativity flows through our organisation. Whether using drama or debate, training journalists, or providing information to people affected by disasters, our responses are innovative and imaginative.

We work in some of the world's most challenging places with tenacity, creativity and skill to deliver long-term positive change.

Respect

We respect each other, our partners and our audiences. We encourage diversity. Wherever we work we look at the cultural context to see what the solution might be. We aim to be open, honest and fair.

Working Together

Long-term change comes through working in partnership. We know that media is only part of the solution.

We listen, learn and we share, aiming to build capacity both among our colleagues and beyond. Our work enables dialogue and creates space for people to think, speak and participate.

We believe in the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in understanding their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world.
