No Matter What

We spoke to Laura about leaving the competition.

We spoke to Laura about leaving the competition.

On Saturday Laura was knocked out of the competition. She may not have come bottom with the viewers but Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Helena after the sing-off. We spoke to her about her time in the Maria House and in the show.

Were you surprised to be voted out of the competition on Saturday?
To be honest, I was actually. I was really, really proud of the performance that I gave and I did actually go back stage after I'd finished my song and said þIf I go out tonight, I go out with my head held high'. I feel really happy, even today I am on a high. I've watched the show back and my friends and family are obviously disappointed. They were quite miffed, I think. In my opinion there were weaker people there, there were stronger people, but there were also weaker people.

So, were you surprised to be called back to take part in the sing-off?
I've taken each day as it's come. I've never expected anything. I didn't expect 100 per cent that I was safe because nobody knows that for sure. I was obviously disappointed to have to do the sing-off.

How did you think it went?
As soon as they announced it was myself and Helena to do the sing-off, I knew that Andrew Lloyd Webber would save Helena, so I was very nervous. It wasn't nervous as such; I kind of new at that point that even if I sang my heart out I wasn't going to stay.

Why was that?
Because she was a sure bet, a dead cert to go through. I was, with Emilie, one of the ones who had to fight to get into the top ten. Also Helena is fantastic. She is such a lovely girl. She's professional – it's a question of whether they chose a professional over an amateur.

What was your reaction to the VT of you crying? Was it a fair point?
I was so happy. Each day was just a dream come true for me. I was just so overwhelmed to be getting further, further and further.

Do you still want to pursuer a career in music?
Definitely. This is the kick I needed to do something about it.

What direction do you see you career taking?
I'd love to be in West End shows. That is still my dream but I quite fancy doing children's TV presenting. I think that would be good.

What would be your dream role?
I obviously wanted to be Maria but that's not going to happen! I would love to be Kim in Miss Saigon but she's supposed to be oriental. I'd like to be in Chicago.

What have you done since Saturday?
I've come home and have been consoled by my family and friends. I've watched the show back and I've been on my local radio this morning.

Were you surprised by the amount of support you've had from the general public?
Definitely, but obviously it wasn't quite enough as I was actually in the bottom two! Everybody has been fantastic and they've all been campaigning really hard. My family are quite disappointed as they thought I had so much support; all the police were rooting for me.

What will you miss most about living in the Maria House?
I will miss the girls terribly, especially Helena. Helena was my best friend throughout the whole thing and we got very close in Maria School. To have done the sing-off against her, I have to say I'd rather lose to her than to anyone.

What's the most important thing you've learnt?
The training has been absolutely fantastic. I have no training and to be given the opportunity to be given training by the cream of the crop, obviously I'm going to miss that. Particularly Zoe, I love Zoe to bits. I gave her a big hug on Saturday night and thanked her.

Who do you tip to win?
I want Helena to win.

Congratulations to all the girls - what a horrible way to end such a lovely show - much more appropriate 'when god closes a door, somewhere he opens a window' disappointed

steve
Laura, you were my favourite and you deserved to go on,I am so sad that we will not hear your lovely voice again, please keep on singing!

Ruth Shephard, Staffordshire
We only got to see Laura perform in conditions of extreme stress on tv - the sing off between her and Emily, and the sing off with Helena. Also, I would be interested to know who chooses the songs for the live shows, as I think 'Torn' did nothing to show off Laura's voice at all. I have seen Laura perform live - she has an enchanting voice and a great deal of control, focus and confidence. I wish her well - don't give up Laura!

Louise, London
It was sad to see you go Laura, it should have not have been you . All the best for the future

Jeanette, Middx
I do believe the worst pair were in the bottom two. Laura was particuarly weak and did sing out of tune. Helena I believed also struggled but was much better in the show down. She had much more passion in her voice and body language! I would like Shobhan to go next as she has the sex appeal but I don't think she is strong enough for the part!

Jess
I can't believe Andrew saved Helena over Laura!! Laura we miss you!!!

Gaz
NOOOO! I cant believe it, Laura was so fit (good voice too). It'll hardly be worth watching the show from now on.

Rachel
I think Helena should have gone out as she wasn't as good as Laura in the sing off, and didn't deserve to be teh first to be sent off

Mave
Well done Laura, shame to see you go,on the night its who performs best but a few others were very shaky and didnt deserve their place.Good luck ,hope this is the opening for you and another producer sees your talent.

stephanie
Laura may have been one of the weaker candidates, but So Long gave a much better indicator of a beautiful soprano - so it's a shame she's out so soon.

Natalie, Leicester
when laura sung 'No Matter What' at the end, it was out of tune but when she sung her part in 'So Long, Fairwell' at the very end of the show, she was fab! Well Done Laura! We will miss you!

Jude
She wasn't that good - sounded very nervous. Glad she has gone

Suki
Laura - youve got an outstanding voice- you go girl! forget the rest.

Steven Christophorou
Laura you did ace. Well done. You won as far as we're concerned.

Anne
I think she did really well, and should have been left in, as others were not as good. At least she had dress sense.

Kate, Halifax
think the nerves got the better of Laura but at the end of the day how would her nerves be at the Palladium? was happy when Siobhan came back to replace Emily. but still gutted that cute little Briony didnt make the live show :(

James, Oakham
Right choice, I'm afraid. I thought both Laura and Helena were weak on Saturday. I think Helena will go next week

Jane
Laura was not the worst - i think Siobhan needed to go. She is too too pretty for the role

Jenny
What a sweetheart Laura is! Surely in the end that counts for much more! I agree with her about Helena too - I think the song choices the girls get given have such a large impact on audience perception.

Clare,Glasgow
I am so happy that Laura went out after sayin on the VT I dont think Simona is Maria how could anyone hurt someone like that.Simona to win!!

Terina
How mean was it to make Laura sing "So long, Farewell" after she had been voted off? Talk about sadistic! Please tell me they're not going to do this every week, it's way too cruel.

Starfinder
It was a shame to see Lura leave at this early stage, as I felt that she outerformed Helena earlier in the show. However, I think the nerves of the sing off affected her performance. I hope that she will not be discouraged by this little set back. You have the talent girl, and you could use that talent in performance with help.

charlotte,gateshead
i missed the later show laura was my fave how can she be gone! she was so good i wish i voted

Edward
Fab show shouldn't have gone

lucy
your relly good im sorry your leaveing.

Ebben
I can't believe Laura went out! SHE WAS DA BEST!!!!!!! She should of won.

Sasha
NOOOOOOOOOOO! What is wrong with Andrew??? Laura was so good and really didn't deserve to leave! She tried so hard at everything and had a wonderful personality - Helena was by far the weakest out of all 10 girls. I'm so disappointed Laura's out, I'll have to choose another favourite now!

william
she did goo in this i think better than some others!!! :) GO U BABE!

Tilly
What?! How could have they got rid of Laura this week? She has an amazing soprano, and the song was a bad choice for her, but she was still miles better than several others - Abi was flat and Helena lacklustre for a start...I just hope Laura continues singing and finds the part for her.

Ruth, Leicester
The song wasn't very good and there were many out of tune notes. I'm happy that Laura went out.
