Are gays welcome in the Church?
updated 05/09/2003
Manchester Cathedral The refusal by church leaders to allow gays and lesbians to hold a special service at Manchester Cathedral has re-opened the old debate: are gays welcome in the Anglican Church?
Manchester Cathedral

The Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) has been banned from holding a special worship at the cathedral.

...to everyone? Are you sure?

The service was to mark the end of a three-day conference at Manchester University held by the LGCM and organisers were hoping that Canon Gene Robinson, the first actively homosexual Anglican bishop, would attend. But the booking has been cancelled.

Church leaders at the Cathedral said they had done so 'in the light of sensitivities and timing in relation to the current debates in the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.'

The Movement says its written to the Bishop of Manchester asking him to reconsider.

As Richard Kirker general secretary at the LGCM, said:
"The Anglican Communion is committed to listen to lesbian and gay people - yet it seems even when we try to lift our voices in adoration of God - we are to be silenced."

Is he right? Is the Anglican church doing enough to accept gays and lesbians?
Can you be actively gay and a practising Christian? Is the church really as tolerant as it claims?
