University students

Education

Manchester has a massive network of primary, comprehensive, grammar and private schools. The city is also home to one of the largest universities in the UK - and largest student populations in Europe.

One of the most difficult decisions many people have to make in moving to a new city is finding the right school, college or university for their children. Here we offer some guidance on where you might begin your search.

School

Schools: There are 167 secondary schools, 64 of which have been granted specialist status and show special strengths in the fields of languages, technology, arts, sports, business and enterprise and maths and computing. There is also a range of high-achieving independent and grammar schools putting Greater Manchester in pole position when it comes to schooling. See Finding a School

Further Education: For the 16+ children there is an extensive network of college provision, both in the form of sixth form facilities and community colleges - 73 FE colleges in total so there is plenty of choice to suit everyone.

University students

Universities: Manchester's universities are world-renowned. The recent merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology) has resulted in one of the UK's biggest single-site universities.
