What we think:"In a city obsessed with beards, guitars and cutting edge cool, it’s good to know there’s acts like Heaton out there, who are prepared to fly the flag for glorious, full-on pop. His sound may lack a little soul and needs an updating, as it can sometimes get stuck at the start of the decade, but you can't fault his passion, commitment and, for the most part, his ability to make a catchy tune." Chris LongWho is in the band?"Heaton is a singer/songwriter from Manchester." What type of music do you play?"Heaton’s music is mixture of electro/acoustic pop." What’s the Heaton story?"Born in St Helens in 1981, Paul Heaton has been writing and recording music for over 10 years. He recorded his first demo at the age of 15 at the famous Parr Street Studios, Liverpool and spent the next few years working with pop groups around Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester. "He moved to Manchester in the year 2000 and started working with his now long time writers/producers, The Brooklyn Foundation. "In 2004 he signed up with CD Baby. This was a great deal for Heaton as it ensured his music was available through the big online stores, but still enabled him to keep full control over his music and releases." How are things going?"He released his debut album Computer Music in 2005, which featured five mp3 number ones, including his biggest download hit Let It Go. "He played a sell out gig at The Retro Bar the same year with a five piece band and was featured in the Manchester Evening News, who nicknamed him The Download King. "In 2007, he released Don’t Wanna Be Lonely, a new track he co-wrote with Phil Ireland & Alan Burke. The single also featured two further demos recorded with The Subway Collective and Oisín Scarlett. "In August 2008, he performed two of his own tracks on the KEY 103 stage at Spinningfields. Heaton’s new single, Once Upon A Time, is due out in February and features mixes by the likes of Project K, Tedd-Z and Octo5."
