Various – Digital Northerner 4 (Fat Northerner)

Given that their last Digital Northerner was based around singer-songwriters and that their last album release was the tremendous Grand Volume debut, you have to admire Fat Northerner for being a label resolutely refusing to be pigeonholed.

That’s because part four of their download only compilations is a squelching, bleeping, merry dance through all things electro, be that purveyed by local wonders or much further-flung knob twiddlers.

And by far-flung, they really do mean it. Cool Weapon, who deliver the taut and wiry Keep On, call in all the way from Australia, while slightly closer to home, French outfit Apple Jelly show some Gallic flair with the twitching toe-tapper Radio.

None of the out-of-towners come close to outshining the local luminaries though. Modernaire show acres of the style and poise that has already won them plenty of fans on the thrilling Scalpel and Tall Zombie, aka DJ duo Leif Johnson and Tony Kavangh, keep one foot in retro brilliance and foot in future fun for Killer Bees' breathless rave.

It’s Real Dolls that take top prize though. The band are fast becoming a very hot tip around Manchester and it’s easy to see why, as Slap Dash shows all the filth, fury and frolics that they’re capable of producing now they’re truly putting their minds to it.

It turns out the admiration for Fat Northerner doesn’t end with their genre-defying approach; it also easily extends as far as their musical tastes, as anyone having the pleasure of downloading this remarkably classy and utterly danceable compilation will find out.
