Introducing… With That Knife

With That Knife met at the University of Salford and have been described as a "Bloc Party/ Minus the Bear soundclash", which they don’t mind, though they admit that none of the band really listen to Minus the Bear.

What we think:

"With That Knife's four vocals don't so much harmonise as fight for attention. Given the chopping, frantic backing, they're all the better for such an approach. Close inspection does find things a little lacking in terms of invention, but if it’s disjointed, beefy and angular indie-dance you're after, you could do a lot worse."

Who’s in the band?

"Owen Barratt on vocals and guitar, Ed Bottomley on vocals and guitar, Mike Hawkins on drums and vocals, Rich Wassall on bass and vocals and Wes Tastard on synth and electronics."

What type of music do you play?

"We play electronic tinged rock, with punk and hardcore influences amongst others. We've got four vocalists so there are plenty of harmonies, and generally our songs are pretty fast with a danceable edge.

"We have been described as a Bloc Party/ Minus the Bear soundclash - which is cool although none of us really listen to Minus the Bear! We mainly play music that we like and that people can dance and sing along too which is pretty important."

What’s the With That Knife story?

"We all met at Salford Uni a couple of years ago after leaving our home towns of Great Barr, Blackpool, Reading, Oxford and Manchester. We started the band in 2007, initially we were a four piece, but our bassist left due to other band commitments.

"After this we decided to get a full time synth player and recruited another bassist, which has expanded our sound - we have had the same line up since October 2007."

How are things going?

"Having played some excellent gigs for Futuresonic, Trip Tronic and Mind On Fire, we have recently been playing some packed out support slots at Night and Day, which has been awesome, including a gig and interview for Channel M which has been filmed and is on our Myspace.

"This summer we won a competition to play Wakestock festival 2008 - which was a great experience and a confidence boost as it was a public vote that won us the slot!

"We've got some good gigs coming up and are currently in the studio working on some new material, which is going be a massive step up from the songs on our MySpace and hope to release something later this year.

"Basically, it’s more gigs, more new music and then who knows? Good things are in the pipeline."
