Introducing… Kristyna Myles
Kristyna Myles has gone from busking to the big time, after her 'discovery' playing on Market Street led to touring with Mick Hucknell and playing with Chris De Burgh.
What we think:
"It’s a brave person who invokes the name of De Burgh and expects to avoid ridicule, but it’s obvious Kristyna isn't interested in being seen as the next 'cool' thing. Instead, she’s intent on producing soulful, thoughtful and powerful music that simply satisfies – and she does that very well. She could probably do with a little more rawness to her sound, but her mainstream jazzy pop is unquestionably strong regardless."
Who is in the band?
"I’m a solo artist/songwriter. I play the piano to write songs on, but when I perform I have my incredible band to back me up. There are up to nine of us in total - horn section, backing singers and rhythm section. I perform sometimes with just my guitarist and other times as a trio, five piece or full band, depending on the gig."
What type of music do you play?
"My style of music is a mixture of pop and soul."
What’s the Kristyna Myles story?
"I’m originally from Leicester but came to Manchester to study at Salford University and have stayed here ever since. I graduated from Popular Music and Recording in 2005 and put my band together whilst at uni."
How are things going?
"After graduating from uni, I was 'discovered' busking on Manchester's Market Street by the MEN newspaper, entered BBC 5 Live’s 'Busk Idol' competition and won with my guitarist Ben Williams.
"Since then I've had some amazing opportunities. I’ve performed my song ‘My Lord’ on BBC Songs Of Praise, sang a duet with Chris De Burgh which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and went on tour with him across Europe playing sold out arenas.
"My song ‘My Lord’ was featured on Songbird 2008, a compilation CD featuring artists such as Amy Winehouse and Eva Cassidy. I’ve recently supported Mick Hucknall on tour - my favourite venue was the Liverpool Echo Arena, the atmosphere was incredible."
