Suzanne and Shaun Maloney

The self-employed couple

Training staff across Manchester for a leading catalogue company involves a lot of driving. But as self employed Suzanne and Shaun Maloney point out, it's not a job you can do on the bus:

names: Suzanne & Shaun Maloney
live: Droylsden
work: Bury, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside
travels by: car/ van
TIF vote: AGAINST

"We live on the edge of Droylsden and our only route out of our street is to head towards the main roads that lead into Manchester or Ashton.

"Shaun & I are both self employed we work for Betterware UK limited – in direct sales. Shaun is an area coordinator, I am the regional sales executive. Our roles are to recruit train and motivate a team of people to deliver and collect the Betterware catalogues across our allocated area. Shaun covers from Droylsden to Shaw and my area spans from Hazel Grove to Ramsbottom.

"Our job daily takes us both out and about from 8am 'til 8pm, sometimes earlier & later, Monday to Friday. as we go about seeing our staff and interviewing would-be staff, driving either our Mercedes van or Vauxhall Sintra car.

"On an average week I cover approximately 250 miles using the M60, M62, M66, M67 motorways and all the A-roads that come off them. Shaun uses the M60 daily also back and forth up to Chadderton & Shaw."

Impact

"If the congestion charge came into force we would have to totally change our travelling times which would mean no interviews booked around the times of the charge, no distributors seen, no customers getting their orders. In total, a loss of income as we wouldn’t be able to get the staff on board that we need.

"To use public transport is out of the question: imagine attempting to see a potential distributor with 240 Betterware catalogues on the bus or tram"

Suzanne Maloney

To use public transport with our job is out of the question: imagine attempting to see a potential distributor with 240 Betterware catalogues plus stationery using a bus or tram, and then taking the goods to the distributors which can be anything up to a super large box. The van is full on a weekly basis as is my car: it just couldn’t happen.

"When shopping for food we do use one of our vehicles. However, when we go shopping into Manchester we always get the bus mainly because of the cost of parking in tow

"We have a young daughter, 13, at home. Our other daughter lives in Dukinfield whose son attends nursery in Audenshaw and we collect him two days a week between 5.30 & 6pm.

"The impact this will have on our business is huge, with the constant rising fuel costs & tax running two vehicles, the extra cost could force us to give up a job we both love doing and one that fits in with our family."
