Shimeon

Shimeon at Soup Kitchen

I am on the phone, talking. Shimeon is on stage with vocalist Joyce. He is approaching song number three, which he momentarily breaks to demand attention from me and the rest of the noisy audience.

"You really are ignorant," he exclaims. Voices rumble and then grow quiet as Shimeon bellows out the choral middle eight to his song 'The Band Played How Great Thou Art'.

There are vocal harmonies and hard-edged guitar, and even what sounds like audience participation too.

"My will is in chains, your will is chains," Shimeon firmly tells them. They, the audience, are momentarily subdued and appear to remain that way until gaps between songs permit applause.

That applause is chaotic, rising and falling and it continues this way throughout the next five songs.

As the sentimental and rhythmic 'I Wish You Well' ended the night on a well-intentioned and light- hearted note, one thing rang out; Shimeon had been right to demand our attention, as his music really does deserve it.
