The proposed location of the super-casino

Casino: all bets are off

If you thought Manchester's super-casino was a 'dead cert', the odds have just got a lot longer. Government sources are now saying the plans are 'dead in the water.' What do you think?

To many, it felt like Manchester had won the lottery when it leapfrogged Blackpool and  London's Millennium Dome to win the licence for the UK's first super-casino. (January 2007)

The city's winning bid was for a massive Las Vegas-style casino at SportCity with a minimum customer area of 5,000m² comprising a huge gaming floor, a plethora of entertainment and table-based gaming, and up to 1,250 unlimited jackpot gaming machines!

East Manchester is still the third most deprived area in the country and business leaders were anticipating a £265m investment to regenerate the area with the creation of up to 2,700 direct and indirect jobs. And the boost to the city's tourism was already being calculated.

However, critics argued that a super-casino would lead to greater gambling problems.

Dead in the water

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has now poured cold water on the plans when he ordered a review into whether casinos are the best way of regenerating towns and cities.

And now Government officials are saying off the record that Manchester's super-casino is  'dead in the water.'

Have Your Say

Will Manchester be a winner or a loser WITHOUT a super casino?

What a Joke, Brown trying to make his mark I guess. Does this mean that Blair was for it and Brown wasn't but just kept quiet. This is another step towards Labour loosing the next election.

Jim
This is a disgraceful decision, I live about a mile from the proposed site. There are no jobs, east Manchester is an employment desert, all the large factories have closedBeswick,Clayton,Gorton,Openshaw,Bradford there isn't one large employer. The casino was going to be a start, restaurants, hotels would have followed.

Ken Staley
will Manchester whinge and whine if it goes anywhere else?I think not as we can tak it on the chin not like the Blackpool criers

Patricia Lancs
Affordable housing, health clinics, community focus areas, child play areas, education/employmnet drop in centers.Who can afford to go to a casino?

Why not ask the cities of the world what problems is has brough them? No problems in Toronto, Port Hope, Ajax or Waterdown and the last three are small towns. Keeps our taxes down. Rama is another and it is on an Indian Reserve. Given them lots of jobs.

it looked rubbish anyway. Would rather they gave b.vue a lick of paint. The only way to regenerate a neighbourhood is to build decent social housing and upgrade local facilities. All that would have happened with the regeneration via a casino in the private sector would have ment more overpriced flats and perhaps another sculpture/water fountain.

maggie
I see MP for Stalybridge & Hyde has had a hand in spoiling fun. It was he who brought in the tax on fun and now has scuppered the Casino. Say no more!

James
The only loser here is Gordon Brown. He's shown then he's the moralising prude everyone expected him to be. If people want to gamble that should be their choice and politicians should keep out. What a pathetic decision and I feel very sorry for the people of East Manchester who now have no hope of more jobs or regeneration coming to their area.

paul simon
lets bring back the investment the this city needs. but lets be more open about any problems such a scheme may cause. how about asking the people off manchester for there opions.
