In true Points Of View style then, why oh why oh why, were they only playing to 30 people in Night and Day? Despite a few people drifting away, due to the shatteringly loud sound levels, there was no excuse. They’ve had enough exposure in Manchester, what with regular In the City slots and April’s Razorlight gig, and it’s not a question of them not being marketable – they’re a must-see band of the moment. Stern words need to be had in someone’s shell-like. Despite the puny audience, they threw everything they’d got into the show – there’s not a dud tune in their set list. Styles switched from retro stompers to impassioned ballads that put stadium dullards Snow Patrol to shame. They have an outstanding knack of creating full blooded, intricate musical textures; three-part harmonies of Beach Boys’ quality, Rachmaninov-esque octave motifs that beef up the sound in a way that multiple guitar thrashing can’t, thrilling and improvisational last chorus bass lines and that’s not even mentioning the enthralling vocal range of frontman Billington. Mohair are a band that deserve to be heard and be justly celebrated for the music they’re producing. There may only have been a lowly few in the crowd, but every single person left with a smile on their face and a whole album’s worth of songs in their heart. |
