Victory over Swindon on Saturday meant the Hatters stretched their winning record to nine consecutive games and each one of those came without conceding a goal, a feat unparalleled in the history of English football.

Indeed the record is so old, it goes back to the first season of the league in 1888, when the League winners Preston North End went on an eight game winning streak, keeping clean sheets in all of them. At that time, Stockport were five years old and still playing under the name of Heaton Norris Rovers. Of course, the wins have also had an effect on the team’s league position and they’ve climbed from 15th to 6th since the run began. Not only that, but goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, on-loan from Wolves, is yet to concede a goal for the club, and while it's not all down to him, the run did start after he made his debut against Boston. County's fine nine It’s not Stockport’s only league record. They also had the first father and son ever to play together when David and Alec Herd ran out for County in 1952, hold the record for the largest winning margin, their 13-0 victory over Halifax Town in 1934, and registered the lowest ever League attendance, a mere 13! It’s not that bad as it seems: it was as a result of Edgeley Park being shut and the game being played after United’s game at Old Trafford. 13 was the number of supporters who came after the United match and paid only to see Stockport. More, more, more…

With the nine wins and nine clean sheets behind them, County need to keep out the opposition just three more times to beat York, Millwall and Reading’s shot-stopping record and if they got six more victories, they’d take the record for consecutive league wins, currently held jointly by Preston, Manchester United and Bristol City. Chances are County would swap it all to secure a place in League One, but who knows? Fingers crossed they can do it all! Chairman Norman Beverley spoke to BBC Radio Manchester, saying that good as it feels to take the record, their target lies elsewhere: "We’re part way through the season, we’re having a fantastic run, especially after last year, and we’re very focused on getting on with things. The supporters are fully entitled, after every thing they’ve been through, to go out and celebrate, but we’re still focused on trying to achieve automatic promotion. "We finished third from bottom last year, so I’d snatch your hand off to take third from top this year!" |
