Salford is a city with a proud history that produced LS Lowry, Albert Finney, Robert Powell, Christopher Eccleston and Ben Kingsley as well as musical talents like Peter Hook and Graham Nash. Now the spotlight is shifting back to Salford following the BBC’s plans to relocate several key departments to Salford Quays in four years' time. "It’s an exciting time for Salford, so we wanted to celebrate the character of the city: its history, music, culture, sport and of course, the people who live there," says Managing Editor John Ryan. Throughout the day BBC Radio Manchester is out and about at various locations, capturing the Salford spirit and talking to the people who have helped make it such a great city. Terry Christian kicks off the day from the waterfront near The Lowry. He looks at what the future holds for Salford and also reflects on its legacy, including its musical heritage. 9am - 12am: Eamonn O’Neal and Dianne Oxberry Eamonn and Di take over the airwaves from The Willows Variety Centre from 9am to 12 noon. The Willows has enjoyed 40 successful years in the entertainment industry with the likes of Tony Christie and Bob Monkhouse. And a man dubbed by many as Mr Salford, rugby club chairman John Wilkinson, will be at Barton to explain about their new ground which will be open in two years. 12am - 2pm: Allan Beswick in the studio 2pm - 4pm: Richard Fair Over the years, tens of thousands of Smiths fans have made the pilgrimage to see the spot where the famous Salford Lads' Club photo was shot. Richard Fair visits the legendary club in the station's mobile studio 6. 4pm - 6.30pm: Heather Stott Heather Stott meets local people at The Langworthy Cornerstone Centre, which provides a café and a crèche, health advice and employment training to the local community. 6.30pm: Citizen Manchester: Irish Night 7pm - 10pm: Sam Walker - Reloaded 10pm - 1am: Phil Wood and Gail Sullivan talking to customers at the Mark Addy pub on Bridge Street |
