People sitting outside a bar in Canal Street
OIC and OWL meet weekly on Canal Street

Out In The City

The bright lights of Canal Street aren’t for everyone, especially if you're coming to the Gay scene a little later in life. If this describes you, there are groups out there trying to provide some of the support that the older LGBT community needs...

Out in the City (OIC) and Older Wiser Lesbians (OWLs) are two volunteer social support groups formed with help from Age Concern, to specifically cater to the needs of older members of the LGBT community.

Sue Morris of Age Concern runs both groups and explains how there was a need for a service like this: “Age Concern did a survey at Europride and discovered that there were no real support services for senior members of the LGBT community. We felt that their needs weren’t being met and that many were vulnerable.”

Support groups for the senior community can be a lifeline in providing advice and a space for sharing experiences. Many members were born during a time when homosexuality was illegal and relationships that were not seen to be conventional were frowned upon.

OIC and OWLs support groups want to help people break the habit of secrecy and isolation that older members of the LGBT community may still feel. The groups have regular meetings in a friendly bar and go on outings to museums, cafes and restaurants.

Being able to enjoy the gay scene with people of their own age allows members to express themselves freely and get used to being open and honest about who they are.  Sue Morris continues:

“I know of one person who believes that being a member of Out in the City saved his life after the break up of his marriage. It helped him to cope knowing that there were people there who would listen and understand. It’s a safe non-judgemental space where people can share their experiences.”
